Peter Coltman Obituary

Peter Oakley Coltman Our beloved Peter Oakley Coltman passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, at home in Austin on Tuesday July 3, 2012. Peter was born in Johannesburg, South Africa on December 27, 1926. He received an Architecture degree and a Town Planning diploma from the University of Witswatersrand. He married the love of his life, Felicity Ann Kassner in 1955. Peter worked for the National Building Research Institute and the South African National Tuberculosis Association in South Africa, and the African Housing Board in Zambia. In 1964, he earned a Master of Science in Community and Regional Planning from The University of Texas, and subsequently immigrated to the United States. In addition to serving on the faculties of the University of Kansas and the Leicester Polytechnic in England, he worked in many capacities for 27 years on the faculty of the School of Architecture at UT, and was closely involved in civic projects in and around Austin. After Peter's retirement in 1995, he and Felicity had many adventures traveling the globe. With infinite courtesy and bottomless teapots, Peter patiently and generously entertained hundreds of friends for decades. Peter lives on in his children Ann, Heather, Peter and Anne, Margaret and Glen; grandchildren Sarah, Adrian, Penny, Christopher, Jeffrey, Timmy, Andrew, Graham, Teddy, and David; great-granddaughter Lily; niece Gail and nephews David, Grant, Martin and their families; and many friends around the world. He leaves a rich legacy that includes a love of gardening, camping, traveling, recycling and reusing every imaginable item, composting, discussing political affairs with outrage, story-telling, and creative cooking. A celebration of Peter's life will take place on Saturday, July 21 at 6:00 p.m. at the Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Museum at 605 Robert E. Lee Road in Austin, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Texas State Parks and Wildlife, specifically to Priority Land Conservation Acquisitions and Conservation Education (http://www. tpwd.state.tx.us/business/donations/).

Peter was my dissertation supervisor when I was doing my MSc in Community & Regional Planning in 1993. I will always remember him as an excellent and passionate teacher. I feel very fortunate to have been taught by such a lovely man.

Felicity, I'm so sorry for the loss of your beloved Peter. As a longtime volunteer of ACMC, I was always delighted with his joyful presence at our concerts and so impressed with how supportive he was of his wife and family in their musical pursuits. We'll all miss him.

When we were in Germany for the music camp, there was that concert. My hosts told me I could dress casually. I showed up in shorts and sandals only to see several couples in tuxes and gowns. Peter loved it and let me know, changing my agony into a warm memory of him and his delightful sense of humor and gusto.
