Sandra Dykes Lynn Obituary
Sandra Dykes Lynn Passed away Tuesday, July 16, 2013, at the age of 68. Sandra was a poet, teacher, historian, botanist, mother, and grandmother. She was born on September 16, 1944, in Longview, TX, and grew up in Jacksonville, TX. She went on to get her Bachelor's in English at the University of Texas, graduating with highest honors. She received a Woodrow Wilson fellowship for graduate studies, and received her masters in English from the University of California at Berkeley. Sandra spent the early part of her career as a poet in Texas, and published two books of poetry: "I Must Hold These Strangers," and "Where Rainbows Wait for Rain." She moved to New Mexico in 1988, and was a Professor of English for 15 years, first at UNM, and later at NMSU Carlsbad. During that time, she travelled the state doing historical research. Her book "Windows on the Past: Historic Lodgings of New Mexico" is a history and travel guide to New Mexico's historic hotels. Sandra retired in 2007 to pursue her many interests, which included writing a new book on cottonwoods, studying Japanese flower arranging, and working with native plants. She was a long time member of the Native Plant Society of New Mexico, and volunteered at the Rio Grande Nature Center. Sandra is survived by her son, DeLesley Hutchins, her mother Inez Dykes, and her grandchildren, Skye and Islay. A memorial service will be held at Central United Methodist Church, 201 University Blvd NE, Albuquerque on July 24, 2013 at 11:00am.
