Stephen James Smith Obituary
Stephen James Smith Stephen James Smith, 53, (SteveO to many), passed away at his home in Austin, Texas on February 24, 2013. Born Oct. 6, 1959 in Victorville, CA, Stephen grew up in a military family, moving often in his early years. He spent his high school years in the panhandle of Florida, graduating from Niceville Senior High in 1977, where he excelled on the Speech and Debate Team, and with the Drama Department. Radio was Stephen's first love, landing an on air weekly show at WFSH radio while still in high school. In 1978, he joined the Air Force as a Security Specialist, guarding planes and aircrafts in Iceland. Upon his discharge in 1982, Stephen returned to California, eventually enrolling at Fullerton College for radio broadcasting, earning his Associates Degree in 1987. His heart was torn between his love for California and the many friends there, not to mention his favorite football team, The Raiders!, and being close to his family and friends in Texas. He spent a lot of time traveling between the two until finally purchasing a home in Austin in 2009. Music was another of Stephen's loves. In addition to his day job, International Dealer Sales for VariZoom, he spent many years in both California and Texas working Security for concerts, including The Austin Music Hall and The Backyard. Stephen is survived by his Mother: Kathleen Smith, Sister: Catherine Smith-Sheridan, her children, Keegan Smith- Sheridan and Alyssa Mercado; Brothers: Jeffrey Smith, wife Susan, their children, Sheridan, Nelson and Sarah Smith; Alan Smith, wife Emma, their children, Victoria and Michael Smith; Jason Smith, wife Jennifer, their children, Trenton, Ashlyn and Brendan Smith. He is preceded in death by his Father, James Smith, Jr. Stephen was quite a free spirit, lover of all music, soft spoken, humble and a true gentleman. He was a stranger to none, friend to many, and loved by all; a gentle giant. A celebration of Stephen's life will be held Sunday March 24, 2013 beginning at 1:00pm at The Artist Compound at The Backyard. http://thebackyard.net Bring a lawn chair!
