Wayne Harkreader Obituary

Wayne Lee Harkreader July 9, 1946 - April 22, 2011 Wayne Lee Harkreader, 64, died at his beloved home in Austin on Good Friday, April 22, 2011 after a remarkably courageous 3+ year's battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his father Robert K. Harkreader of San Antonio who passed away in almost identical circumstances 10 years ago. Survivors include his wife, Helen; son, Robert Chandler; mother, Jackie and brother Robert of San Antonio; bother James of New Orleans; nieces, Tracy and Stacy; an uncle, Mike Kruger of Atlanta, and numerous cousins. A proud graduate of TAMU and member of the Corps of Cadets, Squadron 8 ('64-'65), Wayne went on to distinguish himself in the Air Force, receiving his Silver Wings at Lackland Air Force Base and his assignment as navigator out of Mather Air Base in California before being promoted to Captain while serving his country in Viet Nam. He received the Air Force Distinguished Flying Cross twice. After five years he opted out of the service and faithfully served as an auditor and accountant for the state of Texas until his retirement. Wayne loved family, history, birdlife, and remaining close to his loyal friends. He shall be missed. Services will be at 2:00 p.m. on May 9, 2011 at University United Methodist Church, 2409 Guadalupe, Austin, TX. Burial shall follow May 10, 10:00 a.m., at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Road, San Antonio, TX.

I will never forget Uncle Wayne's laugh! He was so filled with life; that is what I will always remember. I wish I could be at his memorial service.
