Alpha Prince Gonzalez passed away on Wednesday, April 16th, at 12:28 p.m. She was in the ICU of Cornerstone Hospital of Round Rock, Texas, with abdominal cancer. She was 84 years old.
Alpha's parents were Daniel S. Prince and Herlinda Rodriguez Prince, who raised Alpha and her five siblings in Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas, Mexico. Her maternal grandfather, the Rev. Pedro Rodriguez, was one of the first Presbyterian ministers ordained in Mexico. Her paternal grandfather, Robert Prince, was born in Mexico to a Northern Irish family who settled in Northern Mexico late in the XIX century to establish cotton mills for the textile industry there.
Alpha graduated from the University of Texas in Austin, with a Bachelor's Degree in Piano Pedagogy, under the tutelage of the pianist and teacher Dalies Franz. After graduating, she taught music and piano at the Presbyterian Church sponsored PresMex School in Taft, Texas.
On May 27, 1955, she married Josemaria Gonzalez, from Mexico City, in the First Presbyterian Church in Taft, Texas. After one year, the couple moved to Austin, Texas, where Alpha worked for the University of Texas. She retired after 25 years as Executive Assistant to the Chairman of the Mechanical Engineering Department. She was the recipient of an Excellence Award in 1981 from that institution.
Alpha was a devoted, dedicated Christian who served her church in numerous ways. She was a member of All Saints' Episcopal Church in Austin for 47 years. At various times she belonged to the Women of the Church and to the Daughters of the King; she served as president of the Daughters for two consecutive terms. She staunchly supported her church, faithfully serving and volunteering for many parish activities.
She was loved for her directness and for her courage, for her loving ways towards the less fortunate and for her caring acts of benevolence--all carried out quietly and from the heart.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Josemaria Gonzalez of Austin, Texas; her son, Edward, of Austin; her daughter, Alpha Malone (married to Stephen A. Malone), of Bellingham, Washington; grandchildren: James Malone, of Seattle, WA; Elizabeth Malone, of Washington, DC; Andrew Malone, of Seattle, WA; and Michael Malone, of Bellingham, WA.
Alpha was predeceased by her brothers, Daniel Prince and Saul Prince. She is survived by her brothers, Fernando Prince, of Laredo, Texas; and Carlos Prince, of Monterrey, Mexico, as well as her sister Elsa Prince Rios, of Monterrey, Mexico.
A Memorial Service for Alpha, followed by the Interment of Ashes, will take place at All Saints' Episcopal Church, 209 W.27th Street, Austin, TX, on Saturday, May 3rd, 2014, at 4 o'clock p.m.
