Velma MATTHEWS Obituary

Beloved wife, mother, and grandmother Velma Matthews, nee Anderson, 100, of Austin, died April 15, 2014, at the Westminster Manor Healthcare Center in Austin. Velma was born Oct. 1, 1913, in Aspermont, TX, to Hugh William Anderson and Myrtle Harrington. She graduated high school at 15, Texas Tech at 18, and was teaching in a rural country school at 19. She married Joseph L. Matthews of Sabinal, TX, in 1941, who predeceased her in 2002 after 61 years of marriage.

After World War II, she and Joe lived and worked in Bryan/College Station until the early 1950s, when they moved to Arlington, VA, where she was first a high-school teacher and later a high-school guidance counselor. Upon their retirement in 1973, they returned to Texas, living out their remaining years in Austin, spending much of their time at the Matthews family ranch near Sabinal. In retirement she was active in a number of Austin women's groups including P.E.O. Sisterhood as well as the University United Methodist Church in Austin. Both before and after retirement, she and Joe traveled extensively throughout the world, sometimes in connection with government business but often as tourists.

She is survived by her son Robert Matthews and his wife Frances Egan, of Highland Park, NJ; her daughter Nancy Matthews and her husband James Cerise, of Aspen, CO; a granddaughter Avery Matthews, of Aiken, SC; a sister Sara Durham of Ft. Worth, TX; three nephews Steve Fowlkes and his wife Ellen of Ft. Worth, Mark Fowlkes and his wife Gina also of Ft. Worth, and Roy Anderson and his wife Laura of Squim, WA, and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews.

Burial services in the Sabinal Cemetery will be held Saturday, April 26, at 2:00pm, Pastor Leighanne Brechin of Sabinal United Methodist Church officiating. A memorial service will be held Monday, April 28, 10:00am, at the Westminster Manor Chapel, Pastors Bernie Sandberg and John Elford of University United Methodist Church in Austin officiating.
