Curtis Doyle Phipps, 88, passed away on June 1, 2014 in Austin, Texas. He was born August 7, 1925 in Cameron, Texas to Henry Clay and Marylou (May) Phipps. He graduated from the Cameron Yoe High School in 1942.
He joined the U.S. Navy in October, 1942, and was stationed on the air craft carrier USS Essex. While serving on the Essex, he was in many battles in the South Pacific until 1945.
In 1944, after being childhood sweethearts, he married Leona Senkel, the love of his life. They have enjoyed over 69 years of marriage.
Curtis was active in many organizations in Austin including the Southwest Austin Optimist Club, Faith United Methodist Church, a 50 year member of the Hill City Masonic Lodge #456 and a longtime member of the Ben Hur Shrine Center.
After working in the Home Building business, Curtis was employed by the Austin State Hospital as the Volunteer Coordinator for 28 years and retired in 1986. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved the outdoors. He and Leona enjoyed their dance clubs, the Ben Hur Shrine Travel Clubs, and being with his family and friends.
Curtis was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Aileen Dodson, a brother, W. C. Phipps, and his son, Curtis Doyle Phipps, Jr.
He is survived by his loving wife, Leona; a son, Gary Phipps, and his wife, Nancy; grandchildren, Clay Phipps and his wife, Anna, Nancy Scheler, and her husband, Brian, Ashlie Phipps, Amanda Storey and her husband, Cole, and Brian Phipps; great- grandchildren, Erin & Allison Scheler, Chasity Phipps, Caitlynn, Bayley and Nicholas Phipps, Kelly and Julianne Storey.
The family wishes to express our deepest gratitude to Cardiologists, Dr. Kessler and Dr. McMinn, for their constant care of Curtis over the years as well as the staff of Stonebriar Nursing and Rehab, his nurse, Laura, therapist, Courtney, and many wonderful caregivers, friends and family who loved Curtis.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 3:00 PM on Thursday, June 5, 2014, at the Harrell Funeral Home, 4435 Frontier Trail, Austin, Texas.
A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM Thursday at Harrell Funeral Home in Austin. A graveside service with Military Honors will be held at 1:00 PM Friday, June 6, 2014, at the Little River Baptist Church Cemetery, Cameron Texas.
