LEAVELLE, Lt. Col. Gaines Smith

Lt Col Gaines Smith Leavelle, age 91, died on June 7, 2014. He was born in Greene County, Alabama to the late Ivola Lavender Leavelle and Lee Gaines Leavelle. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 58 years Doris Henderson Leavelle, his daughter Jan Leavelle Dodge and two sisters Norma Leavelle Hoots and Carol Virginia Leavelle.

Lt Col Leavelle enlisted in the U. S. Army Air Corps shortly after the beginning of World War II and retired from the U. S. Air Force in 1967 having served as a pilot in World War II, the Korean conflict and Viet Nam war.

He is survived by his son James Clifton Leavelle, his sister Dora Edna Wade, two nieces Deborah Burns and Donna Falgout and one nephew Geary Hoots. Also surviving Gaines' is his special friend Alberta Shelton.

A Visitation will be Wednesday, June 11 from 6-8 P.M. at Cook Walden Funeral Home on North Lamar. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 12 at Memorial United Methodist Church, 6100 Berkman Drive at 10:00 A.M. Burial will follow at Ft. Sam Houston at 2:00 P.M. with full military honors.

In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Memorial United Methodist or the Boy Scouts of America where he was a member of the Order of the Arrow.
