Obituary Condolences

George Edward McCarthy George Edward McCarthy, Jr. 75, died February 23, 2012, with his family by his side in Austin, Texas. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 3, 2012 at St. Francis School (Barnes Gymnasium) 300 E. Huntland Drive in Austin. He was born December 1, 1936 in Salina, Kansas to George Edward McCarthy Sr. and Mary Helen Connolly McCarthy. His family eventually moved to Dallas, Texas where George, Sr. began a successful career as president of his brokerage company. After graduating from Jesuit High School, he attended Georgetown University, where he received a degree in Foreign Service. Many years later he received a Master of Arts in Creative Writing from the University of New Hampshire. George enjoyed a successful career in the international steel industry, retiring from Acciai Speciali Terni Stainless Steel in 2002. He consulted for Cogne Acciai Speciali until his sudden passing. He often said, "I lucked into such a good thing when I went to work for the Italians." George enjoyed meeting people of all cultures, having travelled to many countries and loved the diversity he found at St. Francis School. He also loved the challenge of the daily New York Times crossword puzzle, assembling intricate and complicated jigsaw puzzles and sampling red wine with his good friend and neighbor, Dr. George "Buddy" Tipton, Jr. He was an avid reader and there was not a date in history he did not know. He loved a lively political conversation and frequently wrote to Jack Cafferty at CNN. While he was known for many exceptional qualities, he will be most remembered for his loving and caring nature and his uncanny ability to strike up a conversation with any willing soul. He is preceded in death by his parents and his eldest brother, Michael Donovan McCarthy. He is survived by his first wife, Nubia C. McCarthy, mother of his daughter, Mary Helen McCarthy and Marilyn Smith McCarthy, his wife of 36 years, mother of Bridget Alexandra McCarthy and Brendan David McCarthy. He is also survived by a brother Thomas Kevin McCarthy, his three grandchildren, Alysia Nicole, George Edward and Mary Catherine Narro, two nieces, Ann Breen and Caroline Washko and two nephews, Thomas Matthew McCarthy and Kevin Fitzgerald McCarthy, as well as his beloved dog, Sancho El Guapo. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Francis School, Austin. Obituary and memorial guestbook available online at www.wcfish.com
