As I prepare for my baptism today, I feel led to memorialize John. I did not know him very long, and I did not get to see him very often, but those times I shared with him were such special times. He never once spoke to me of Christ's Salvation, but to be in his presence and share his company was to see Salvation embodied. His life and his heart were one under God. John's faith, hope, and love greatly influenced the change of direction of my life toward Christ, and I thank God every day for those meals we shared. My condolences to his family, and may God's grace heal the loss that reason cannot.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Griffith family. My wife and I worked with John at Texas Instruments in the 80's. I, too, served in the United States Air Force and I would have loved to hear many more of his military experiences. John always had a smile on his face for everyone he met. He was a wonderful man, living God's word.
May he rest in peace.

My Parents, John and Dorothy Rishling are friends of Mr and Mrs Griffith. My sisters and I enjoyed your Parents very much! They were such a Part of what made Bethany UMC-- so wondeful! We lived across the street from John and Mary for 13 years in Austin and are better for having known them as friends and watching our kids grow up with theirs over those years. We share in the suffering caused by such an untimely event and will miss him.

I continue to think about what a great friend, fellow AF Colonel, fellow Searchers Member, and gentleman John was. He volunteered for everything and always thought of others. I shared coffee, wine, and fellowship with him in both of our homes and elsewhere. We were to travel together on hops to Germany or Hawaii, but it will not be. My loss for so many reasons. What a gentle, loving giant that has passed. I loved him.

John was a customer here at The Hardware Store and we always enjoyed waiting on him. At first impression, one might compare him with Clint Eastwood but there was such a warmth about him that was evident even when talking about things as mundane as toilet flappers. We are all so sad to have lost such a nice customer and friend. Our sincere condolences to your family.

I will miss John's patriotic ties and wide smile as he always sought out my disabled son to shake his hand when he saw us at church. I always teared up when John, tall, athletic, and still looking splendid in his uniform, proudly carried in his beloved country's flag at the beginning of the church service close to Veteran's Day. He made our lives richer for having known him, and he will be missed.

May 10, 2012

It was our privilege to know John and Mary when we were neighbors in Balcones Village, where our children grew up together. It is with a sad heart that we send our condolences to the family.
