Obituary Condolences

Retired Lt. Colonel Edmondson Overton Lt. Colonel Edmondson Overton was born on September 29, 1926 in Creedmoor, Texas. He was one of nine children born to Eliza and Nicholas Overton. After high school he enrolled in Tillotson College and during this time was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served in Europe during World War II. Upon completion of this service, he completed his ROTC training and earned his BA degree from Tuskegee University in 1952. In 1953 he was called to duty as an USAF Officer and was assigned to the Navigation Program at Ellington Field in Houston, Texas. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Air Force upon graduation and rose to the rank of Lt. Colonel. He served 20 years prior to his retirement in 1973. During his tenure in the Air Force, he earned his master's degree in business. After his retirement he taught business to high school students and also worked as a volunteer teaching sign language to deaf students. Edmondson married the love of his life, Mary Marilyn Samiere, in 1954. Later, he was stationed at Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage, Alaska; Amarillo AFB in Texas; the US Recruiting Office in Buffalo, New York; and The Minuteman Program at Ellsworth AFB in South Dakota. After his retirement from the Air Force in 1973, the family settled in Rapid City, South Dakota; then in 1976 the family moved to Riverside, California. Ed and Marilyn subsequently lived in Mesquite, Nevada for a brief time before building their dream home in Fischer, Texas (Canyon Lake). Lt Colonel Edmondson Overton and his wife, Marilyn, have seven children in whom they instilled faith in God, integrity, honor, love, respect for others, and the importance of education. Edmondson was steadfastly devoted to his wife and children His hobbies included playing golf, traveling around the country with Marilyn in their RV, and watching sports with his family-especially football, basketball, and track. He also loved spending time with his grandchildren. Grandpa was great at the grill, and his grandkids still talk about those "amazing pancakes" he treated them to. Lt. Colonel Edmondson Overton is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn, seven children - Ralph (Nancy), Sherman (Jeanne), Sheila (Greg McClinton), Ronald (Phyllis), Kenneth aka Abdul-Kareem, Marsha Dodson (Michael), and Renee Watson (Gerald); fourteen grandchildren (Ryan, Amber, Jarin, Jason, Erin, Gabrielle, Camry, Miles, Tyler, Jessica, Sydney, Frances, Gerald Jr., and Natalie); and four siblings - Nicholas (Robbie), Lydia Ross, Roscoe (Johnnie Mae), and Euela Lane and was preceded in death by four siblings Artie Hazel, Elvie, Sherman, and Volma Overton Sr (Warneta). He is survived by a host of other relatives and friends. The family of Retired Lt. Colonel Edmondson Overton both loved and honored him. He was our "gentle giant', a man of courage, humility, dignity, love, faith, character, and strength. He will remain in our hearts forever. The Viewing for Lt. Colonel Edmondson Overton is at the Doeppenschmidt Funeral Home in Canyon Lake, Texas from 4 - 7pm on Wednesday, 12 September 2012, with a Rosary from 7 - 8pm. Services will be held at 10:00am on Thursday, 13 September 2012 at the St. Thomas Catholic Church in Canyon Lake, Texas.
