George Michael Lyday Obituary
George Michael Lyday The spirit of George Michael Lyday took flight on November 29, 2012. Mike and his wife Jenny, longtime residents of Dripping Springs, built their own happy home and raised their children surrounded by the beautiful hill country and their beloved Sycamore Creek. Mike was born in Dallas on Dec. 28, 1951. From high school in Abilene, he moved to Austin to attend UT, where he received a BA in Science. After various occupations ranging from UT shuttle bus driver to fine woodworker, he returned to school at Southwest Texas (TSU) and received a Master of Science in Biology. It was then that he found his dream job with the City of Austin's Watershed Protection Department. All gusto and love, Mike led the rare life of many pleasures and few regrets. He lavished his deep affection among his lucky friends without restraint. He was a loyal friend and a true gentle soul. His love for Jenny was one of the great themes of Mike's life, and he spoke of her always with awe and gratitude. A proud and tender father, Mike treasured his children, Julie and Eric. Mike's love for the rivers, streams and wetlands of Texas was epic and he worked to protect them with a bulldog tenacity that was awe-inspiring. The spirit of his tireless work will live on in the many colleagues and students he inspired, and the many watery places he protected and paddled. Mike loved a good story, and told many at his own expense. Unbelievably funny, he made us all laugh deep and long. Really deep and really long. Mike Lyday was a lover of music, food and drink, a raconteur, a hunter, a traveler, a teacher, a philosopher - an extraordinary friend, husband and father. Mike was a hero. His departure leaves a hole in our hearts and a hunger for yet another round of laughter with our dear friend. May he rest easy in our collective love and affection. Donations in Mike's memory can be made to the Hill Country Conservancy.
