Thomas Pickens Obituary

Thomas (Ty) Boone Pickens IV Thomas (Ty) Boone Pickens IV, 21, of Austin, Texas, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday morning, January 29, 2013, in Fort Worth, Texas. He was a junior at Texas Christian University. Ty was born on September 13, 1991, in New York, to Jennifer Long Pickens and Thomas Boone Pickens III. He was a graduate of Austin High School, where he was on the golf and debate teams. He was a lover of music, art, snowboarding, golf and hunting. Ty adored his family as they adored him. He loved spending time among the grand mesas of the north Texas Panhandle with his cousins. As a child, he was raised in the storybook towns of Charleston, South Carolina and Austin, Texas. His world revolved around his loving mother, father, sweet sister and adoring dog Zeus, who will love him forever. Ty was a very generous young man, who was willing to sacrifice anything for anyone. He had a sweet and kind soul. As a deep spiritual and philosophical thinker, we are sure that he has peace as God welcomes him to his new home in heaven. At TCU, Ty was majoring in strategic communications with a minor in business. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Ty is survived by his parents, Jennifer and Tom of Austin, and his sister, Joyce Pickens of Los Angeles, California; his grandparents, Lynn O'Brien and T. Boone Pickens, both of Dallas; his aunts, Pam Pickens of Newport Beach, CA, Deborah Stovall of Dallas, TX, Liz Cordia of Alexandria, VA, and Cynthia Blodgett of Hampton, NH; and an uncle, Bruce Long of Oxford, MD. There will be a private burial for family at the Mesa Vista Ranch in Roberts County, located in the Texas Panhandle on Thursday. Services in Austin, Texas, will be scheduled at a later date. Memorials in Ty's honor can be made to the T. Boone Pickens Foundation, for the establishment of a "Ty Pickens Memorial Scholarship" at TCU. Contributions can be mailed to the T. Boone Pickens Foundation at 8117 Preston Road, Suite 260, Dallas, Texas 75225. Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home, 7405 W. Northwest Highway, Dallas, TX 75225, (214) 363-5401

Pickens Family,
Words cannot express my sadness on the loss of your wonderful son. Both he and Joyce were students in my Spanish class at Austin High, and I am so blessed to have worked with such amazing young people. I pray that The Lord would wrap his arms around you during this difficult time. Please know that you have teams of people praying for you all, and our prayers will continue in the weeks and moths to come. My love to you all.

I heard such sweet things about Ty, from my son, Weston Green, who loved and admired him as a TCU friend and pledge brother. My heart is broken for you all, his family, and please know that my prayers and heart are with you. Only our Heavenly Father knows the reason for allowing this loss. Let HIM wrap His loving arms around you now, and comfort you as only HE can.

Please know that a huge network is holding your family in their hearts and prayers as you bid farewell to Ty. Like many other TCU parents, I didn't know Ty but look at his picture and think of my own child (also a junior at TCU), and realize the fragility of their young lives:full of promise and energy, but not to be taken for granted. Your incomprehensible loss is heavy on the hearts of many people you'll never meet, and we are all sharing your grief.

My son Grant is a pledge brother / dear friend of Ty's. I drove to be with him upon this news. He said he was the nicest and dearest and kindest friend anyone could hope to have. He knows he is in the arms of Jesus and they will be friends forever. We are loving Ty and his family in San Antonio. I'm thankful for his friendship with my child. Blessings....
