MSgt (Ret) Bennie Joe Mays Bennie Joe Mays was born on January 18, 1936 in Grandview, Missouri to Robert Lee and Phoebe Mays. He departed this life on Saturday, April 20, 2013. He was preceded in passing by his parents and his son, Bennie Joe Mays, Jr., and is survived by his wife Martha Jo Mays; mother-in-law Marie Maul; children Tom Mays, Elizabeth Mueller, Gary Mays, Debbie Danner; step-sons Tommy Roberts and Marty Roberts; brothers Don, Jimmie, Jerry, Terry, Lonnie, Kenny and sister Ruth Ann Masterson; grandchildren Craig, Nathan, Scott, Allyson, Randi, Jordan and Taylor; four step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and ten step-great-grandchildren. Bennie served in the Air Force for 20 years as an intelligence analyst, radar specialist and air traffic controller. He was also a real estate broker for 5 years and retired in 2007 after 26 years with the Postal Service. He lived in Austin for 33 years, enjoying fishing and bowling, scoring a perfect game and winning many trophies. He loved the steel guitar, playing one in a country music band as a young man. Bennie was loved dearly by all his family and friends and leaves them with many wonderful memories. The family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, April 25, 2013 at Harrell Funeral Home, Austin, TX. A chapel service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, April 26, 2013 at Harrell Funeral Chapel, Austin, TX. Burial will follow at 1:45 p.m., Friday at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, TX. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the or to the .
