Scott Amis Obituary

Scott Alexander Amis On May 19, 2013, the world lost an exceptional soul. Scott Alexander Amis of Oakland, California, passed away at the age of 47 due to complications following surgery. He was taken too soon, but was comforted by his Mother as he took his last breath. The son of James Joseph Amis and Judith McPherson Amis, Scott was born on January 8, 1966, in Berkeley, California. His early childhood was spent in Berkeley. Always a curious child, at age 3 he dropped a dozen eggs one-by-one on the kitchen floor to see if they all splattered the same way. In elementary school he walked off the playground to see if he could get a job at a local bakery. As a pre-teen living in the Boston, Massachusetts area, he was introduced to street hockey, was shortstop on the local All-Star baseball team and made pocket money by shoveling snow during the Blizzard of '78. Moving to Austin, Texas, as a teen, he graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in 1984 where he played football for the Fighting Maroons, did all those things that teenagers do that mystify their parents, and made many lifelong friends. During his college years, he moved back to his beloved Bay Area to attend San Francisco Art Institute where he graduated with a Fine Arts degree. After dabbling in a few careers, he found his calling as a Flight Attendant. He first learned he had a love of flying as an attendant for the charter company, North American Airlines, where he won the Flight Attendant Award for his class. In 2006, Scott was selected for Southwest Airlines inflight training where he received the award for Academic Excellence and graduated first in his class with the achievement of a 100% GPA. Southwest Airlines management has called him a "man of integrity" who "earned the LUV, respect and admiration of his coworkers," and he received many letters of commendation from both passengers and management. Scott was a generous, gentle, creative, compassionate, and loving human. Frequently engaging in random acts of kindness, he never expected acknowledgement or thanks. He was passionate about causes in which he believed and was not afraid to speak his mind. A seeker of knowledge and truth, Scott was constantly expanding his understanding of life and the universe. A true Renaissance man, he loved people, animals, art, music, film, books, and gardening. He was continually lending a hand or ear to one in need, though he rarely asked for help from others. Scott was a wonderful son, brother, grandson, and uncle. His four nephews adored him, and he them. His greatest wish was that everyone in the world would learn to get along with and love one another. Scott was preceded in death by his father, James Joseph Amis; his grandfather, James Alexander Amis; his grandmother, Mozelle Johnston Amis; and his grandfather, Leonard Albert McPherson. He is survived by his mother, Judith McPherson Amis; grandmother, Elsie Robertson McPherson; sister, Kelly Amis von Kreisler, her husband, Nick, and their four boys, Alex, Aaron, Kirk and Kyle von Kreisler; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Scott also had three cats that he considered his own children. He was preceded in death by Nicotina and is survived by Bella and Winston. Scott's final resting place will be at Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland, California, alongside his father. The family is comforted by and thanks their family and friends for all of their kind words and loving gestures. In lieu of flowers, have a slice of pizza and raise a glass in Scott's honor. Or, you can make a donation in his memory to Sweet Relief (San Francisco Bay Area Musicians Fund), the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, or the charity of your choice. There will be a Celebration of Life for Scott in the Bay Area, at the Reinhardt Alumnae House at Mills College, on June 23, 2013 from 2-5p.m. All who would like to remember Scott and share loving memories and funny stories are welcome to attend. There will also be a gathering in Austin, Texas, later in the summer. For additional information, you may contact Kelly von Kreisler.

Scott saw the world through the eyes of a poet.
A dog could pee on the sidewalk and he would see the shape of a heart and conclude that it's meaning is world love and peace.
He always stopped to smell the roses, his appreciation of flowers and plants was contagious. One of his favorite albums was Stevie Wonder's "Journey through the life of plants".
His was a unique, beautifully vivacious soul.
His presence will be deeply missed and his memory cherished.

An old friend,

Dear Scott - I loved your friendship, I respected your outlook and opinion and I will miss your presence in my life.

This is a beautiful tribute and so appropriate in every way. Scott was an amazing soul and I feel blessed to have known him.

Scott was one of my best friends from junior high, until the day The good lord took him from us. He was a teammate, "The Maroon O-Line", and a High School Brother. He was one of the leaders of "The Herd", in our school. We miss him tremendously. Loyal Forever does not only apply to our almamater, but to his friendship with all of us. Scotty, we love and will miss you. Derek Bateman

I am a fellow flight attendant from SWA and worked with Scott on many occasions. My prayers and love go out to Scott's family and friends and his beloved cats. Scott was an amazing person and I will miss him so. One of my fondest memories of Scott was a Denver overnight. We arrived early in the afternoon and Scott said he had made all the plans and transportation and that our crew was going to explore the downtown area. Needless to say we had a wonderful time. I really enjoyed my time getting to know Scott better. I am still so saddened and in shock over Scott's passing. My heart is very sad but my wonderful memories will live on forever in my heart.
