Mike and Sherri were married in Austin on September 18, 1976. Soon after, Mike enlisted into the United States Air Force and left for basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. After attending technical training at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, Colorado, Mike received orders for a three year assignment at Andersen Air Force Base, Guam. During their time in Guam, Mike and Sherri traveled extensively in the Pacific and loved to retell stories of their many adventures in Guam, Japan and the Philippines. After his Air Force Enlistment was complete, Mike enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin and graduated in May of 1984 with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration. While at UT, Mike entered the Texas Army National Guard at Camp Mabry. In June 1984 he attended Officer Candidate School and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. Shortly after commissioning, he attended the Officer Basic Course at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas. He then served as the Medical Plans Officer for the 49th DISCOM, 49th Armored Division, followed by an assignment to the 111th Area Support Group, Bee Cave Armory, Austin, Texas where he held several positions. Throughout his years in the Texas Army National Guard, Mike traveled to Germany over 30 times coordinating training between the 111th Area Support Group and their active duty counterparts. Mike's last assignments were with State Headquarters as a Force Integration Officer and as a Plans and Operations Officer. His military service took him around the world, and he greatly enjoyed the experience of traveling. He retired from active duty as a Major and was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel for retirement. Mike's awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal w/1 OLC, Army Commendation Medal w/1 OLC, Army Achievement Medal w/2 OLC, Air Force Good Conduct Medal, Reserve Component Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal w/1 OLC, Army Service Ribbon, Air Force Service Ribbon, Air Force Overseas Service Ribbon (Long Tour), Air Force Longevity Service Ribbon, Reserve Component Overseas Training Ribbon (19th Award), as well as numerous state level awards and honors. He was active in the Austin University Area Rotary Club and was their 2014-2015 President Elect and the past president of the Rotary Club of Silicon Hills. He is survived by his wife of 36 years Sherri Sheffield, daughter Kristen McGoldrick and husband Ryan, son Steven Michael Sheffield, and twin nieces Elizabeth and Sarah Garner. Mike and Sherri were proud last month to see their daughter Kristen receive a new job offer, son Steven graduate from Texas Tech University, and nieces Sarah and Elizabeth graduate from Connally High School in Pflugerville ISD.
