Kirby Meyer

Kirby T. Meyer Kirby T. Meyer, 78, of Austin, TX passed away peacefully on June 22, 2013 with his loving wife Janis Meyer and family at his bedside. He was born March 14, 1935 in Weimer, TX to Ida and Otto Meyer. Kirby grew up in Weimer TX, New Braunfels, TX, and New Orleans, LA, as well as Japan for a short while. He earned his B.S. in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University in 1957. He was promoted through the ranks in the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets to Commander of Squadron 3, in addition to his serving on the Texas Governor's honor guard, the Ross Volunteers. Kirby went on to complete his M.S. in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M in 1959. He was an originator of the Aggie Code of Honor, which states that "An Aggie does not lie, cheat or steal, or tolerate those who do." While at A&M, he met his beautiful wife, Janis, and they were married on July 3, 1957. His career began in 1959 with the United States Air Force as a civil engineering officer. From 1962-1964, he worked at Frank G. Bryant & Associates, a geotechnical and construction materials testing laboratory in Austin. Kirby went to Harvard University in 1969, where he studied under noted geotechnical engineer, Arthur Casagrande, for a specialized course for teachers and practicing engineers. From 1964 to the present, he has been an Owner, Director, Officer and Senior Consultant in MLAW Consultants & Engineers, active in geostructural design, pavement engineering, and forensic engineering. In addition, he has been an owner and held various positions in MLA Labs, Inc., Geomechanics Services, Inc., and Geostructural Tool Kit, Inc. Kirby has published numerous papers on the subjects of foundation design and evaluation, expansive clay and pavements, and has authored two books. With over 50 years' experience, his professional record in geotechnical and geological engineering, failure investigations, forensic studies, expert testimony and foundation design is respected throughout the industry. Kirby served the Lord by teaching Bible classes and using his engineering skills to help design and oversee the building of several churches. He loved hiking and backpacking in the mountains, hunting with friends, and traveling with his family. Kirby will be remembered by his family, friends, and associates, as a brilliant engineer, with high ethical standards, as a loving husband, and the best father and grandfather in the world. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Janis Meyer; daughter, Melanie Davis and husband Rick; son, Kyle Meyer and wife Erin; and grandsons Josh, Connor, and Tyler Davis, and Austin and Andrew Meyer; his sister Kaye Medina and husband Victor, and their three children and families; and cousins, Della Mae Stewart and Milton Jonas. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, June 25th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Harrell Funeral Home, 4435 Frontier Trail, Austin, TX. Services will be held on Wednesday, June 26th at 2:00 p.m. at Bannockburn Baptist Church, 7100 Brodie Lane. The committal service will be Thursday, June 27th at 2:00 p.m. at the New Bremen Cemetery, FM 626, Karnes County, TX.
