Michael Fitzgerald ADAMS Obituary
ADAMS, Michael

Michael Fitzgerald Adams, a Mueller Austin resident, died on December 10, 2013 after a long battle with colon cancer. Michael was diagnosed in October 2011 and bravely endured over 30 chemotherapy treatments, three surgeries, and various clinical trials in his attempt to return to a life without cancer. He embodied the spirit of perseverance and never let the cancer overshadow the years he did have left. He truly personified Livestrong at every step of the way.

Michael's life was much more than that of a cancer survivor though. He was born January 4, 1964 in Dayton, Ohio. He graduated from Forest Park High School in 1982 and from Sam Houston State University with a degree in Biology in 1997. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1985-1989 and in the Reserves from 1989-1993. He is survived by his wife Felicia Adams; his young children Bonnie, Abigail, Daphnie, and Delanie; his parents Isaac and Charlotte Adams; his brothers Isaac Adams, Jr., James Adams, and Peter Adams; his sisters Jewell Ragsdale and Jacquetta Walker; 15 nephews, 12 nieces, and many more extended family members. His proudest career accomplishments were his time working for Apple Computer and most recently his time teaching at the University of Texas Elementary School. The UTES community of teachers, staff, and students were family to Michael and he felt that it was there that he was doing the work he was called to do. He always considered himself the lucky one to have the chance to work with the students at the school. He celebrated their accomplishments as much as his own, and was proud to wear burnt orange each day.

Michael was an avid cyclist and found great joy in encouraging others to take up the sport. He had endless patience for helping beginning cyclists navigate routes and learn to pace their ride. Outside of spending time with his family, Michael was the happiest being free on his bike on long rides.. His favorite rides were Livestrong, Ride for the Roses, Mamma Jamma, Hill Country Ride for AIDS, Rosedale, and Tour de Gruene.

The most amazing thing about Michael had to be his love of life. He always fully celebrated life and lived to stretch each minute to the fullest. He did not let the complexities of life or cancer get him down. Instead he turned each challenge into a goal to achieve something higher. He took advantage of each vacation, each holiday, each celebration and each milestone to bring others into his joy. He was the most amazing husband, father, and friend. He truly taught all around him to love more, laugh more, and appreciate life for what it is. Our hearts are emptier with him gone, but also truly filled with all he has left in his legacy. He will be so dearly missed.

A memorial service honoring Michael's life will be held at Saint John's United Methodist Church on Sunday, December 15, 2013 at 2:00 pm., with a reception immediately following. Michael wanted to encourage everyone attending to ride their bikes to the service if they were able, and to dress casual-wearing a bike jersey, Livestrong shirt, AdamsStrong shirt, or something green (his favorite color).

In lieu of flowers please consider donating to the following charities that helped the family through Michael's battle with cancer: Saint John's United Methodist Church, Livestrong, AdamsStrong.com, Wonders and Worries, and Without Regrets.
