NEWTON III, Thomas Edward "Tom"
September 14, 1948 to April 4, 2014
Thomas Edward Newton, III (Tom) passed away April 14, 2014 after a yearlong battle with cancer. He is survived by his father Col. (USAF) Thomas Edward Newton, Jr of Lockhart, TX; His daughter Lori Lynn Monson, and granddaughters Ashley (17) and Audrey (15), of Austin, TX; His sister Bunnie Juhl, brother-in-law Paul Juhl of Tuscon, AZ. and nephew Gary Juhl of San Diego, CA.
Tom was a highly decorated Vietnam Veteran, earning the "Bronze star" among several other military honors, while proudly serving our country. Ceremony with full Military Honors will be held at his Eternal Reefs Memorial Service in Galveston, TX. in the Fall. Family will provide details at that time.
Tom was born in Japan and attended schools, while his father Thomas, his mother Jeanne (deceased) and sister Bunnie served as an Air Force Family. Tom graduated High School in Smyrna, TN. He attended Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas, where he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration in 1973. Tom was an Assistant Vice President in the Banking Industry for many years in Austin, TX and later in Jacksonville, FL. When he returned to Austin, Tom worked for Texas Parks and Wildlife as License Manager, receiving a ten year honorable recognition award Feb. 28, 2014. When Tom wasn't working, he enjoyed camping, fishing, hiking, target shooting, and working on his ranch in Harwood, TX.
Over the past 20 years, Tom has had a true passion and dedication to fundraising efforts for the American Leukemia Foundation and was recognized with an award from former President George W. Bush for his fundraising service. In memory of Tom, the family would welcome donations to the American Leukemia Foundation, the American Cancer Society or the Wounded Warriors for our soldiers.
The family would enjoy celebrating Tom's life with close friends and family at Lori Monson's home Saturday, April 12, 2014 between 3:00 and 6:00.
What Cancer CANNOT Do
It cannot cripple LOVE. It cannot alter Hope.
It cannot corrode Faith. It cannot destroy Peace.
It cannot kill friendship. It cannot suppress memories.
It cannot steal Eternal Life. It cannot conquer the Spirit.
It cannot silence COURAGE. It cannot invade the SOUL.

Tom, wish you were here to talk to, but you are in a much better place so I will see you there later.

I knew Tom as a correspondent banker with the Austin National Bank, had some great golf outings with him, football games, and especially hanging out at a ranch in Blanco County, swimming and catching fish in Miller Creek. Tom was always upbeat and a true southern gentleman, definitely one of the good guys.

Dearest Family Members,
I did not know Tom personally, however, it pains me to know we have lost a Texas Parks & Wildlife family member as well as a compassionate, giving, person. I pray you will feel his love surround you for the rest of your lives especially when you are reminded of him in everyday moments. --Judit Green

I was so sad to hear of Tommy's passing. Yes Tom, you will always be Tommy to me as we grew up together. You were always my favorite cousin. There will never be anyone with a bigger heart or a more giving person. I will miss our chats and the ecards you sent for every occasion. Love you cousin Tommy - may you rest in peace. Paulette

Those we care for don't go away. They walk beside us everyday. Unseen, unheard but always near. Still cherished, still missed and forever dear. A wonderful co-worker to many of us, whose presence is greatly missed.

My heart goes out to Tom's family and close family of friends as each mourns the loss of this truly lovely man. We both worked at Texas Parks and Wildlife, but in different divisions/buildings. In the summer of 2013, after not having seen Tom for several months, I did -- and knew something was or had been wrong -- and I asked him. He told me about his illness and that he was fighting it with all he had. He also said he was at peace no matter the outcome, telling me he'd had a good life, a great family, and who could want for more. We even talked about what his end of life plans would be, and I told him about Eternal Reefs, saying that when I "go" I want to be turned into a reef ball. He really loved that idea and asked me to send him information, which I did. I had to smile when I read: "Ceremony with full Military Honors will be held at his Eternal Reefs Memorial Service in Galveston, TX. in the Fall." I know whenever I go the the coast now, I will think of Tom Newton and how he's still on the job. God bless.

I was so sad to learn of Tom's passing. I would regularly see him in the gym and always admired his commitment to staying so fit. He always had a smile on his face and was such a friendly person to all. We will miss such an inspiring man. My deepest sympathies to the family of Mr. Tom Newton. I was very fortunate to have worked with Tom at Texas Parks & Wildlife and will miss him and his smile tremendously. Everytime I called he would greet with "What's my favorite Law Enforcement person up to?"I never hesitated to help him or his team. I was so proud to have worked with him on his project of the TLC Gordon Darby license system- because of him and all his hard work -the good people of Texas were able to buy their new licenses! I am very proud to have gotten the honor to work with Tom and very proud to call him my work co-peer and friend. I will miss you Mr. Tom Newton !! Thank you for all you did and the memories you leave behind my friend and FB friend. Sincerely, Irma D. Sanchez

Tom was a good friend. He loved his family and always looked forward to taking them out to dinner. He worked hard and played well. We had some good times at Part Alto and on the San Marcos River in Staples where he always caught the biggest fish. Someday we will meet again. Until then, Tom rest in God's loving arms. Vaya con Dios!
