Dockter, Leland
Leland Elenor Dockter October 3, 1920 - April 20, 2015 Leland was born in his North Dakota home, 7 miles north of Parshall. His entire formal education was completed in a one-room schoolhouse where he graduated from the 8th grade. He worked in the Parshall area until 1940 when he married his first wife, Minnie Torgerson, in June, and moved to the Los Angeles area. In the LA area, he held several jobs as a dairy farm hand, motorcycle mechanic, Sears salesman, cookware salesman, and Douglas Air craft employee. He was rejected by the draft board due to his Asthma, and moved to Salem, Oregon in 1948 for better air quality. He completed 32 years of employment with Oregon Pulp & Paper / Boise Cascade in Salem and was retired for 32 plus years before his demise. He filled his retirement time with traveling in the US and doing many handyman jobs for who-ever needed carpentry, electrical, or plumbing work done. He also spent several years raising and selling Christmas trees. He loved his little farm on Portland Road and spent much time keeping it neat and trim. Leland leaves a legacy of strong moral character as a faithful husband, father and grandfather, and was deeply loved by his family and adored by his grandchildren. Leland was always aware of, thankful for and overwhelmed by the many blessings the Lord showered upon him. He had a very fun sense of humor that made him a delight to be around. Leland Dockter will be fondly remembered for his generosity and hard work. He raised his family to be well-mannered and "to put others before yourself." He is one of the last of the generation to live under harsh, hand-to-mouth conditions, and to achieve the American Dream despite being raised by a poor North Dakota farmer. As such, he is a self-made man who pulled himself up with his bootstraps. He learned true grit along the way and remained forever positive and optimistic when times got tough. Many who knew Leland would describe him as one of the kindest individuals they ever met. He is survived by his wife Irene Foster Dockter, his two children, Lon & wife Laura of Tacoma, WA., and his daughter Jeannie of Bend, Oregon, four grandchildren: Bryan and wife Alison of Boise, Idaho, Lise of Federal Way, WA, Lonna and husband Gordy of Port Orchard, WA., and Lori of Washougal, WA., and two great grandchildren, Randy and Shelly Grant. Visitation is available on Friday 4/24 from 1 PM to 3 PM at the Virgil T. Golden Funeral Home, 605 Commercial St. SE Salem, OR 97301. Graveside service will be held on Saturday 4/25, at 10 AM at Belcrest Cemetery, 1295 Browning Ave. SE Salem, Oregon. A Memorial Service will be held on May 16th 2015, at 11:30 AM at Peoples Church, 4500 Lancaster Dr. NE, Salem, Oregon, 97305.
