Matthys, Kenneth
Kenneth Matthys November 22, 1935 - May 12, 2016 King City, OR - Kenneth Charles Matthys, longtime resident of Keizer and Salem passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family at his home in King City on May 12. Ken was born November 22, 1935 to Charles and Marguerite Matthys in Fargo, North Dakota. He grew up on the family farm southwest of Fargo and took over running the farm at age 19 when his father died. Ken and his wife Joyce moved to Keizer with their five children in 1963. He worked for Willamette Industries at the Albany Paper Mill for 30 years. However, he was best known by Keizer residents as a Marion County Deputy Sheriff. Ken joined the Marion County Sheriff Reserve Program in 1968 and in 1970 was authorized to operate a patrol vehicle alone, taking many assignments as a relief officer. He rose to the rank of Captain and under his guidance the Reserve Program grew to 79 officers. He often said that the Paper Mill paid the bills, but he got his job satisfaction from the 14 years he worked as a deputy. Ken was an avid fisherman and hunter. After retiring, his search for fish and game changed to a search for seashells, a hobby that took him to a number of foreign countries including the Philippine Islands, and earned him numerous awards at competitive shell shows. Ken is survived by his wife of 59 years, Joyce; his children David (Tarina) Matthys of Lake Oswego, OR; Chuck (Teresa) Matthys of Lakewood, CO; Rick (Shelly) Matthys of Portland, OR; Laura Matthys of Beaverton, OR; Susan (Dwayne) Janz of Boise, ID; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild, and his sister Maxine Matthys of Fargo, ND. He was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Marguerite Matthys. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 23, 2016 at 11:00 AM at the Keizer Elks Lodge, Keizer, OR. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Oregon Shell Club Scholarship Fund for marine science graduate students at the University of Oregon and Oregon State University. Donations may be mailed to P.O. Box 1135, Mulino, OR 97042-1135.

McKEE, Alan
ALAN McKEE September 25, 1956 - May 12, 2016 Salem - Alan Lyle McKee, 59, died Thursday, May 12, 2016 at home after a two year battle with cancer. He leaves his wife of 32 years, Sharon (Carder) McKee; his stepson, Scott Miley and his wife Christie; his stepdaughter, Kelly Miley; five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. He also leaves his mother, Ardith Heinrichs, her husband Dean Heinrichs; his loving sister, Patricia Parks and her husband, Marvin Parks, and their four children and grandchildren; and his brother, Robert McKee and his wife, Leanne McKee, and their three children. He was born in McMinnville and raised in Amity Oregon, the son of Alton Lyle and Ardith (Burbach) McKee. Alan was a born leader. He was an officer in FFA, student government, and on staff for the year book. His love of sports came early in life and he proved to be a talented athlete in football and basketball. He was the team captain many times. Later in life he carried on being a leader with over two decades on the Orchardgrass Commission and the board president of the Rickreall Water District. He was respected as a man of few words but when he did speak it was with the best and fairest of intentions. Alan was a farmer his entire life. He worked with his father on the family farm. His father's life was tragically cut short when Alan was only 17 years of age, and he stepped up and took over for the family. He purchased the original family farm from his great uncle John's estate when he was only 21. No easy task of negotiating with the 16 family members. There and through other lands he rented he grew his farming operations. Alan was a good and generous man with the most positive outlook on life. He battled long and hard with cancer and through many difficult and disappointing treatments he never let the disease take away his strong will to live. Alan was a true "warrior." A memorial service will be held on May 21st at the Perrydale High School gymnasium at 1:00pm. The Dallas Mortuary Tribute Center is caring for the family.
