Alvin William Hildebrandt
November 4, 1926 - April 10, 2014
SALEM - Alvin, 87, was born at home in Sheridan, OR to William and Helena Hildebrandt on Nov. 4th, 1926. He was raised in Sheridan, OR along with his brothers Arnold, Emery and sister Irene. He is survived by: Brother Emery and wife Helen of Corvallis, OR; Seven children by Mary E. Lyons (deceased 1975); Mark and Laura of Salem, Bruce of Lyons, Lori Stearns of Bend, Randy of Lyons, Jeff and Li of Sacramento, CA, David of Salem, Dennis of Salem, and two step-daughters by Mildred A Cahill (deceased 1999); Carolann Larkwood and Chris Cahill of Eugene, 13 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
He served in the US Navy
from November 1944 until July 1946 followed by a number of years service off and on in the Merchant Marines. In 1947 he graduated from Sheridan High School and attended OSU. After many adventurous years at sea, which included commercial fishing along the West Coast, he settled in Salem, raised his family and worked for NW Natural Gas Company until he retired in 1989. Alvin had a passion for anything outdoors and he especially loved to fish, hunt, hike, camp, garden, travel, water ski and snow ski. Alvin's greatest passion was skiing, which led to his tenure as a volunteer Ski Patroller on Mt. Hood for 27 years, he enjoyed skiing trips all over the world which included his annual visits to Utah. In his retirement years he enjoyed many cruises, and playing Texas Hold-em locally where he was known as a tough competitor, aka the "Alvin-ator". He always looked forward to his class reunions and family reunions each summer in Sheridan.
His passion for the outdoors, especially skiing and hunting, is still alive in his children and grandchildren today and will be for generations to come. He instilled in his family a great work ethic, always saying "work hard, and play harder for a full life." His legacy lives on in those he touched in his life, family, friends, and acquaintances, and will be greatly missed by all.
A celebration of life will be held Friday, April 18th at 2:00 pm at City View Funeral Home in Salem, OR, directly followed by an off site reception.
