Dan Schrader lost his courageous battle with Burkitt's lymphoma on Saturday, April 19th. He was surrounded by family, friends, & fellow firemen throughout his final days. Dan retired in 2011 as a Lieutenant Paramedic with Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue after 37 years of service. It was a career he felt very passionate about and always said he had the pleasure of going to work and doing something he loved.
Born on June 23, 1953 in Lubbock, Texas, Dan moved to Corvallis, Oregon with his parents in 1966. He graduated from Corvallis High School and later joined the Corvallis Fire Department sleeper program while attending OSU. The sleeper program confirmed his career choice and he transferred to the Fire Suppression program at Chemeketa Community College. Dan joined the Marion County Fire Dept. as a volunteer in 1974. He remained a volunteer until he was elected to the Marion County Board of Commissioners for the Fire District where he was later named an Honorary Member of the District. In 1980 he completed the EMT IV class through Chemeketa as one of the first students to be nationally certified as a Paramedic. In his later years as an EMT, he taught Advance Life Support for the emergency responders and the medical profession.
Dan held himself to a high professional standard and was recognized by the Board of Directors of the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians for 30 consecutive years as a Nationally Registered EMT in January 2013 by completing the most comprehensive recertification program for EMT's in America twice each year throughout his professional life.
He made other community commitments outside his professional life. As a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, he was elected to the positions of Secretary to the Order and Noble Grand.
Dan is survived by wife Luann, three sons Courtney Schrader (Washington, DC), Christopher Schrader (Salem) and Andrew Schrader (Topeka, KS). Two granddaughters, Presley Schrader and Rosalina Schrader who managed to wrap their Papa around their little fingers and brother David Schrader & wife Kathy (Huntingtown, Maryland) and sister Nancy Ericksen & husband Scott (San Antonio, TX), nieces, nephews, and two great nieces.
A memorial service is being held on May 16th at 11:00 a.m. at Rolling Hills Community Church - 3550 SW Borland Rd, Tualatin, OR 97062. The family requests any donations in honor of Dan Schrader be sent to Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue for the Chaplains Program (tvfr.com
