Ernest "Ernie" Allen Stroup

July 7, 1936 - November 15, 2012

SALEM - Ernie Stroup was born in Brooklyn, Illinois and raised in Butte, Montana. He joined the Navy at age 17 and served his country for four years. Upon his return, he graduated from Jefferson County High School in Boulder, MT.

Ernie moved to Salem in 1964 with his new bride, Joy (Ekola). Here, Joy and Ernie raised two daughters, Bonnie and Colleen. Later on, he enjoyed spending time with his "Little Guys," Josh and Jon.

Ernie attended both the Montana School of Mines in Butte, Montana and Oregon College of Education, where he earned his degree in Education. He worked at Hillcrest School of Oregon for 30 years and was known for his jokes. He loved working with the kids and making people laugh. He usually ended his conversations with, "Have a fun day."

Ernie had many interests and his toy collection included a boat, motorcycles, and several cars. He enjoyed working on his cars, playing the guitar, singing, playing pool, "dinkin' around," and "shootin' the bull."

Ernie died peacefully in his sleep on November 15, 2012. He is preceded in death by his brother Richard ("Smokey") Stroup and his step-sister Sarah ("Sadie.") He is survived by his wife and daughters; his grandson, Daniel; his brother, Noah Stroup; his sister, Joan Johanson; his half-brothers Kenny, Joey, and Albert; his step-sisters Judy and Faye; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pops, you were not only my dad, you were my friend and mentor. We will miss you, but you will always be with us in spirit.
