Francis L. "Dude" Chitwood
June 4, 1924 - October 25, 2012
SALEM - On October 25, Dude transitioned peacefully from this life with his wife lovingly by his side, surrounded with love by his family and 4 grandchildren. He was born in Redmond, Oregon to Roy and Ethel Chitwood. He graduated from Bend High School in 1943. He was a U.S. Army
veteran of World War II
, enlisting in the army 1943. He was a dog trainer in the 35th Infantry Scout Dog Platoon stationed in the Northern Apennines Mts. of Italy with his dog Pal. He returned from combat February 1946 a decorated soldier. He loved his dog Pal and would talk about him often even throughout his Alzheimer's. He worked for and retired from Master Service Center in Salem, Oregon in 1980. Dude was an avid fisherman and was known to out fish everyone. He had many fun memories fishing at Detroit Lake with his nephew Danny Williams. He met his wife Gertie in 1994 at the Keizer Senior Center where they both loved to dance and they were married shortly thereafter on October 29 1994. He was a very loving and devoted husband, step father, grandpa and uncle. Dude is survived by his wife Gertie of 17 years, his step daughter Penny Gabbard, son-in-law David Gabbard, his 4 grandchildren Olivia, Jakob, Miles and Evelyn Gabbard and his nephews Danny Williams of Clackamas, David Williams of Bend, and his nieces Joyce Parks of Eugene and Jewell Gates of Roseburg. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Marvin, sisters Etta and Winifred, and his first wife Linna Chitwood. Our gratitude to the people at Serenity Hospice and The Woods.
Funeral Services will be held at Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service in Salem on Friday, November 2, 2012 at 9:00 am followed by Military Honors ceremony at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland at 12:30 pm.
