James attended high school in Grants Pass, Oregon. Upon graduating he attended the University of Oregon where he joined Kappa Sigma Fraternity, eventually becoming president. He also was in Demolay where he became a Chevalier. After graduation he attended the U of O medical shool in which he completed in 3 years. After being discarged as a Captain he and Mary Lou moved to Portland, Oregon to fullfill his residency in Pathology. At the same time he tought as a Clinical instructor for an additional 3 yrs. After 3 years of practice at Providence Hospital he, Mary Lou and son Bud moved to Salem where he started his own Lab practice in the basement of the Lively Bldg. He became a Pathologist at Salem Hospital and served as head of Pathology for about 20 yrs. And the later years he turned his focus toward being a Medical Examiner for Marion and Polk Counties up to his retirement after 46 yrs at Salem Hospital in 2005.
It was no secret Jimmy was an armchair athlete. But when it came to his beloved Oregon Ducks he was a fanatic thus earning him the nickname "The Grand Duck".
There are many things that can be said of this great man that would take pages upon pages. A very good friend summed it up by saying, "He was an expert in making people feel good".
