Joseph R. Doerfler

Salem - Joseph Raymond Doerfler, 92, of Salem died Thursday in Salem. Joe was born in Silverton, Oregon to Joseph and Una Doerfler in 1920. Joe loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He graduated from Silverton High School in 1939 and enrolled in the University of Oregon where he studied Journalism. In 1942 he enlisted in the Army
serving in the 9th Division, 34th Infantry in North Africa.
In 1950, he married Peggy Gabriel and moved to Salem where he worked for the State of Oregon for 34 years. He was also a member of the Post 9 American Legion and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Survivors include wife Peggy, sister Mary Luhring, son Rick, daughters Linda, Pat and Barbara (Harriman), four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The memorial service will be held at the Salem First Presbyterian Church, 770 Chemeketa St. NE on Wednesday, July 31 at 11:00 am. The family requests that colorful clothes be worn to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Salem Hospital Foundation or to Wounded Warriors. Arrangements by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
