Leona Arleen Gilmour

SALEM - Leona Arleen Gilmour, a resident of Salem, Oregon for most of her lifetime, passed away on February 15, 2014, at age 83. Leona was born on April 2, in Salem to parents Leonard and Marie (Fox) Burgoyne. She attended Salem High School (now North Salem High School) and graduated in 1948. She then attended Oregon State University, graduating in 1953 with a BS degree in Home Economics and was a member of the Kappa Delta Sorority. In 1989, Leona graduated from Western Culinary Institute in Portland as a chef.

Leona married Gayle W. Gilmour in 1956. They were married for 32 years and had three children: Brett, Holly and Kerry. Leona was a stay-at-home mom with her children, also working on the family farm and volunteering extensively with a variety of organizations. She received the Citizenship Service Achievement Award in 1967, for her efforts on behalf of the following organizations: American Association of University Women (A.A.U.W.), Salem General Hospital, Kappa Delta Sorority Alumnae, South Salem Lions Club Auxiliary, Marion County Extension Service and Advisory Board, including 4-H, Jane Jefferson Democratic Women's Club, Salem Art Association and OSU Alumnae Association-Lifetime Member.

During her children's school years, Leona was also active in LSAC and volunteered at the schools. She was active in the Farm Bureau (State and County), was a member of the Family Test Group for Farm Journal Magazine and served on the State Women's Council. As a member of the Consumer Advisory Council of the State Dept. of Agriculture, Leona represented A.A.U.W. and was vice-chairman in 1971. While Leona's husband Gayle was the Administrative Assistant to then Congressman Al Ullman (for eight years) Leona coordinated many social functions for the Congressman. She was also a member of the Salem General Hospital Auxiliary and served as President in 1970, and Fundraising Chair.

In 1971, Leona was appointed by Governor Tom McCall to the State Board of Agriculture as the Consumer Representative and was reappointed by Gov. Bob Straub and Gov. Vic Atiyeh for a total of eight years and was the first woman President of that board in 1979. Her other affiliations included the Assistance League of Salem, Salem Area Chamber of Commerce Boosters, Oregon Consumer League Director - Salem Chapter, Marion County Historical Society, 4-H Sewing and Cooking Clubs, Salem Tennis and Swim Club, Christ Lutheran Church, Saint Mark Lutheran Church, Sunday School Teacher at Our Savior's Lutheran Church.

Leona worked for Whiteside Appliance Center as a Home Economist in Corvallis, South Salem Pharmacy and Capital Manor here in Salem and for five years, she was resident advisor (house mom) at Beta Theta Pi Fraternity at OSU in Corvallis.

Over the years, Leona enjoyed, in addition to her family and volunteering, cooking, a condo in Maui for 23 years, fishing, tennis, mah jongg and her poodles. Leona is survived by her children - Brett Gilmour of Salem, Holly Crawford of West Linn, Kerry Gilmour of San Francisco, and her son-in-law Greg Crawford and two granddaughters, Casey and Hayley Crawford.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2014, at 10:30 am at Our Savior's Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to the Salem Assistance League or Our Savior's Lutheran Church.
