SALEM - Mabel was born in Kramer, North Dakota on April 9, 1915 to Adolf V Feller and Julianna (Manske) Feller, German immigrant homesteaders. She was the fifth of six surviving siblings, all of whom preceded her in death.
She graduated from Kramer High School in 1933 and lived on the family farm until 1937 when her beloved mother died. She moved to Salem that year with her brother, sister, and fiancé Ellert Wilhelm and found work as a maid, in a laundry, and in the canneries. She and Ellert were married on Dec. 19, 1942. In 1946 they adopted a baby boy who died 6 months later. In 1947 Rodger was born to the family and in 1948 Jeannette was born.
Mabel worked for 25 years at Willamette Cherry Growers, retiring in 1977. In her retirement she enjoyed lots of travelling and was very active in her church, Court Street Christian and First Church of the Nazarene, as well as Geology Society, the Marion County Livestock Association, her neighborhood association, and the Guthrie Park jam sessions. Until 2011 she maintained her own home and extensive vegetable garden.
Mabel was preceded in death by her husband in 1967 and her son Rodger in 1997. She is survived by her daughter Jeannette Smith and husband Eldon Smith of Silverton, OR; her granddaughter Conni Edwards of Sunnyvale, CA; her grandson Thomas E Edwards of Beaverton, OR; and several nieces and nephews.
Mabel was a friend to many organizations and individuals and will be greatly missed by all. Her energy, humor, and outspokenness added so much to the lives of many people. She was recognized by several awards for her volunteer work.
