Richard (Rick) Charles Hansen, Jr.
January 15, 1947 - March 9, 2013
SALEM - Rick passed away on March 9, 2013, following a year-long battle with cancer. He was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, on January 15, 1947, to Richard Charles Hansen, Sr., and Ruth Ellen Ritzen Hansen. He graduated from West Linn (Oregon) High School in 1965. He then served in Vietnam as a television and radio newscaster and DJ in the U.S. Army. He earned a B.A. from Edison State College in Trenton, NJ. From 1974 to 1987, Rick developed and managed a public radio station and taught radio broadcasting classes at Brookdale Community College in Lincroft, New Jersey. He recently had the pleasure of visiting Brookdale to be honored for his work in creating the station and for his dedicated mentorship of students. The radio studio has now been renamed the Rick Hansen Studio. He worked as a DJ, sportscaster, and news director for KFAT and KNND radio, and loved calling play-by-play for high school sports events on the radio. He later was the webmaster for the OSU extension service, and most recently was employed by the Salem-Keizer School District as webmaster and technology support.
Rick married his soul mate, Kathy Pfeifer Beaudoin, in Salem on September 15, 1989. He had a terrific sense of humor and was a very "punny" man. He loved to read and spend time with his extended family, and especially loved all the children. He wrote poetry with a depth of emotion that could bring tears of sorrow or joy to the reader.
Rick was preceded in death by his mother. He is survived by his father; wife Kathy; daughters Amy De La Rosa (Alberto), Allyson Foulks (Richard Mezzina), and Pamela Beaudoin; sons Zachary Hansen (Alyssa), Robert Beaudoin (Lynn), Scott Beaudoin, and Michael Beaudoin (Melissa); sisters Jo Sullivan (Frank) and Rebecca Hansen (David Garcia); 23 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of Rick's life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, March 15, at Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service, 605 Commercial St., SE, Salem. Contributions can be made in Rick's name to Odyssey Hospice, Salem, Oregon.
