Robert Lee Pickerel

Robert Lee Pickerel age 93, passed away August 27, 2013 at his home on Hazel Green Rd, in Salem.Bob was born to Lillie Allen and Jesse Pickerel (later known as George Hardy) May 18, 1920 in Pyrolite, CO. He was raised by his mother and her second husband Bert Mc Beth. Bob would be the big brother to the 8 children born to this marriage.Bob enlisted in the Army
Air Corp in 1939 and was stationed at Hickam Field, Hawaii. He was wounded during the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He would then serve on Canton Island and Amberley Field in Australia.After the war, Bob reunited with his biological father and settled in Salem,OR. They opened a small grocery store they proudly called Hardy and Son on the corner of Lancaster Dr and Silverton Rd. Bob went on to work for Blue Lake Packers/Agripac and retired after 35 years as the receiving superintendent.He loved the blue sky,fresh air,and the open road. He was an avid fisherman . He was a Mason and member of the Elks Club
. For many years he was a volunteer fireman
for the Middle Grove Volunteer Fire Dept.
He was married 3 times.Three children were born of the first marriage to Edna (Teddy) Pickerel. They divorced and she is now deceased. His second wife Irene Ziebart Graves died in 1989. His third wife Mary Davis Anderson survives him.
Surviving children Robert and Cathy Butler Pickerel of Cedar Bluff, AL, Suzzane Jewett of Hampton,VA, Leigh and Loren Whittaker of Loudon,TN; sister Shirley Lent of Grand Junction,CO and brother Richard McBeth of Sun City,AZ.Bob is mourned by 7 grandchildren,and 11 great grandchildren. Grandchildren are Tyson and Kimberley Whittaker,Nottingham,MD; Noelle and James Barefoot , Smithfield, VA;Tina and Mikel Thompson,Huntersville, NC; Robert and Shannon Pickerel,Milton,GA;Jacob and Lara Pickerel, Marietta,GA;Grant Jewett of Reseda,CA, and Juliana and Paul Clark of Vienna,VA.He is remembered by step children Debbie and Doyle Allie, Richard, Robert,and Rodney Campbell as well as special friends Nate and Jenny Timmons.
A private family celebration of life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers the family suggests a donation to
