Charlotte Colleen Filer

Oregon journalism educator Charlotte Colleen Filer, 83, died March 24 in McMinnville following a short illness.

Professor Filer served both Linfield College in McMinnville and Pacific University in Forest Grove during her career.

A memorial service will be held Friday, April 17, 11 a.m., at the Dayton, OR Pioneer Evangelical Church, 300 Fourth St. Dayton, OR. A private burial was held for family and friends at the Dayton Odd Fellows Cemetery. Macy and Son Funeral Home, McMinnville, is in charge of arrangements.

Following graduation from Linfield College in 1954, Ms. Filer worked as a reporter for the McMinnville News-Register and later for the Linfield College news bureau. In 1960, she took a leave of absence from Linfield to obtain a Master of Arts degree from the University of Iowa. She returned to Linfield as journalism professor and director of the college's news bureau until 1974. That same year she became public information director at Pacific University. She retired from Pacific in 1989.

Ms. Filer was born in McMinnville to Lena Marie Dower Filer and Emmett Sylvanus Filer on March 7, 1932. She grew up at the family residence in Dayton, OR and graduated from Dayton High School before entering Linfield College in 1955.

After her return to Linfield as a member of the faculty, Prof. Filer advised the student newspaper and yearbook, was advisor to the journalism honorary, Pi Delta Epsilon, and edited the college's alumni newsletter, the Linfield Bulletin. Later at Pacific University she also edited Pacific Today, the university's alumni magazine.

Ms. Filer was preceded in death by her parents, brother Martin Emmett Filer and sister Audrey Lippens. She is survived by her niece, Karla Dupree of Rancho, Cordova, CA, many former students and special friends Edith "Duffy" Reynolds of McMinnville and Tom Barreto of Portland.
