Obituary Condolences

Einar Leonard Aas January 23, 1918 - November 29, 2008 SILVERTON - Einar was born in Minot, N.D. to Norwegian immigrants, Ole and Liv Aas. He started school at age 5 to drive the horse and buggy for his two older sisters and graduated in 1935. He farmed for several years. He married Ruth Bjelland on October 17, 1943. They moved out to Salem in 1955. He was a meat cutter for Safeway from 1955 until his retirement in 1981. He enjoyed singing and traveling with the Thorsmen, the Norwegian Men's Chorus of Salem, including two trips to Norway. He was a member of the Christ the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and the past President and member for 34 years of the Sons of Norway. He was affectionately known by his family as "Bestefar." He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ruth; son, Dwayne (Colleen) Aas of Salem; and daughter, Beverly (Frank) Stickles of Leavenworth, Wash.; three grandchildren, Jeffrey (Jennifer) Aas of Salem, Kelley Aas of Claremont, Calif., and Lars Pelley of Leavenworth, Wash.; also three great-grandchildren, Ruby, Elijah, and Isaiah of Salem; and two nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, and one brother. Contributions may be made to Christ the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church building fund. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, December 4, 2008 at Christ the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 4440 State St., Salem. Arrangements are by Unger Funeral Chapel, Silverton.
