Ernest Walter Sturzinger Obituary
Ernest Walter Sturzinger

July 2, 1926 - April 19, 2014

Ernest Walter Sturzinger passed away Saturday, April 19, 2014, from complications from a stroke on April 10. He was 87 years old.

Dad was born July 2, 1926, in Seen, Switzerland, a small town just north of Zurich. Growing up, he assisted his dad and grandfather and brother processing and delivering wine. When Dad was nine years old, his father died leaving the family business with no one to continue it. He worked in many types of agricultural jobs including farming and logging, most of which involved horses.

Dad completed his schooling and took his love of horses into the mandatory military service and served in the Swiss Cavalry from 1946-1950. In 1950, when he was 23, he decided to immigrate to the United States to live with his Uncle Ernst, a general contractor in Detroit, Michigan. Dad celebrated his 24th birthday on the boat to New York.

Dad attended Michigan State for two years taking agricultural classes while working on various dairy farms in the area. Hoping to purchase a dairy farm of his own, he moved to California and met Mom and they married in San Diego, California. They explored the northwest finally settling in Salem, Oregon. Although he never was able to purchase a farm, he did work for Curly's Dairy over 36 years as a pasteurizer in the plant.

After retiring in 1992, Dad and Mom traveled all over the state and western United States exploring around the next corner. After Mom passed in 2005, Dad traveled back to his home in Switzerland several times for months at a time and was able to spend some quality time with our family there.

In more recent years, Dad loved tending to his yard and garden full of beautiful flowers, fruits, and vegetables. We were able to enjoy many trips with Dad to the coast, central, and southern Oregon. He was appreciated and respected by all who knew him for his kindness and gentle spirit.

Dad is survived by his daughter, Pam Medzegian (Robert), Ernie D Sturzinger, and Paul Sturzinger (Diane), five grandchildren, Ernie J (Megan), Eric (Christina), and Allison Sturzinger (Matt Seifert). He has also been blessed by six great-grandchildren: Marcus, Dominic, Lauren, Ethan, Jason, & Grace.

We love you and will miss you.
