Helen Anderson

May 12, 1927 - January 3, 2014

Helen was born in Timberlake, South Dakota on May 12, 1927, one of eight children of Tom and Mary Gorman. The Gorman family moved from South Dakota to Mt. Angel in 1937 and then to Woodburn in 1938. Helen graduated from Mt. Angel Academy and from Mt. Angel Normal School where she earned a BA degree in Education and Teaching. She married husband Don Anderson in 1948 and soon began a family. Helen and Don lived in Silverton and Moro, Oregon before finally settling in Mt. Angel in 1955, where they lived out their lives.

Helen loved children, raising nine of her own and becoming grandmother (MeMa) and great grandmother to fifty more. There were no sweeter sounds to Helen than a giggling child or a cooing baby. Her home on College St. was always the refuge and gathering place for her ever-expanding family.

Helen had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to laugh. She enjoyed many friends, but always held a few very dear. After Don's passing in 2000, the St. Marys Parish, her close circle of friends, her children and their children, kept her involved in a rich and active life.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Mary, and brothers: Bob, Jim and Tom. She is survived by brothers: Joe, John and Larry, daughters: Anne Wylie, Donna Herr, Barbara Beyer and Erin Silva; and sons: Tom, Bill, Lawrence, George and Eric; 28 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Recitation of the Rosary will be at St. Mary Church, Mt. Angel at 7pm on Wednesday, Jan. 8 . The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am at St. Mary's Church on Thursday, January 9.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Catholic Daughters and St. Anne's Altar Society of St. Mary Parish.
