Jack Allen Benson Obituary
Jack Allen Benson

March 15, 1948 - April 29, 2013

SALEM - Jack Allen Benson was born in Salem Oregon, March 15, 1948. He graduated from McNary High School in 1966 where he enjoyed a successful high school career as Rotarian Boy of the Month, President of the Ski Club and Yell King.

He attended University of Oregon where he met such free thinkers as Ken Kesey and guest lecturer Timothy Leary and was encouraged and excited by their views of their non conformity to the establishment. After a serious discussion with his father regarding hair length Jack hitch-hiked to Las Vegas and finally found a job as a dish washer in a casino. At this point he soon realized the finer points of capitalism and decided to cut his hair and become a slot machine mechanic. He soon was noticed and hired by J. Rooklin Enterprises' and began a career of establishing gaming machines in casinos throughout Asia. He lived mostly in Japan, The Philippines, and Nepal. He returned to Las Vegas in the 90's and established a gaming website and sold equipment to profit and non profit organizations.

If you ask Jack's friends and family who he was they will all agree on one thing, he was generous. He was generous of his time, his labor to help others and even more generous with his money if that were the need. He never knew a stranger, and could strike up a conversation with anyone no matter what their walk of life.

What defined Jack the most was his love of dogs. He frequently would rescue dogs and bring them into his home. There were times that he may not have enough money to eat, but his dogs never went hungry or without their medicine.

He had the good fortune to re-unite with a former love, Deanne Atiyeh who walked this hard road of terminal cancer with him. She gave him hope, companionship and support for which his family will be eternally grateful.

Jack was preceded in death last October by his mother, Frances Benson. He leaves behind two sisters; Linda Benson-Whitehurst and Jolie Benson-Gilman. He also leaves behind Sandy, Miller and Banja his dogs who are still sitting on the porch waiting for him to return.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jack Benson Memorial Trust at the Aumsville Pet Clinic, 295 Main St. Aumsville, Oregon to help pets whose families due to hard times cannot feed their animals.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday, May 11, 2013 at Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
