SALEM - Jewell Altemus left her earthly residence on January 22, 2006 to make her home with her Heavenly Father. She was 77.Jewell was born in Lacomb, Oregon to Henry and Jeannette Ames. She grew up on farms in the Brownsville and Scio areas. She reminisced about rounding up the cows at milking time when we didn’t have a trained dog: Cool crisp air with beautiful sunrises, fresh tracks in the mud at the edge of the small creek might show a raccoon had come to drink or catch a minnow. She drove both horses and a tractor as she helped in the family fields. She picked various seasonal crops, and then worked at Stayton Cannery. Her love of needlework won her ribbons at local, county, and state fairs. In 1961, Jewell moved to Corvallis to work in the offices of Oregon Dept. of Education on the OSU campus. She married Charles Altemus in 1972, moving to Oakridge, Oregon. She became known as The Goat Lady by milk customers. She was monitor for the local Christian School, then secretary for the First Baptist Church of Oakridge. Then she worked for the US Forest Service. After Charles was temporarily paralyzed, they moved into town. Charles went to Heaven in 1994. Due to poor health, Jewell moved to Salem in 1999 to live with family. She attended Bible Study when able and continued to knit and read.Jewell was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Laurel and Darrel; and husband Charles.
