Joyce A. Roth

November 5, 1930 - February 7, 2014

SILVERTON - Joyce Roth was born in Silverton, Oregon to Walter and Marie Larson on November 5, 1930. She passed away in Silverton, Oregon on February 7, 2014 as a result of medical complications from a digestive tract disorder. She was 83 years old.

Joyce lived in and around the Silverton area her entire life. As the daughter of a farmer/logger, she spent most of her days as a young girl in the Silverton hills working on the family farm, milking cows, tending livestock, and experiencing life in various timber "camps." She loved wintertime when the crops were in and snow covered the ground, and spent long evenings around the fire with family and friends. After graduating from Silverton High School in 1948, she moved to Portland with her good friend, Lila Youngdahl, where the two worked as secretaries. Following several years in the city, Joyce returned to Silverton, where she met Robert (Bob) Roth as a result of a date arranged by Bob's younger brother, Irv. Bob and Joyce were married on November 21, 1953. Faithfully committed to each other, Bob and Joyce celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary shortly before Bob's death in 2010.

Joyce was known to many as a gracious Christian lady, with a smile, a kind word, and time for everyone she met. She loved God, and that love was apparent in the way she served those who were fortunate enough to cross her path. She was active in her church (Emmanuel Bible Church) and in related ministries, including Christian Women's Club. She rarely missed time for personal devotions and prayer, and cherished the hours she spent with her Lord and Savior. That time produced a divine peace in her life that was unmistakable.

Together, Joyce and Bob raised a family of five children, a barnyard of various livestock, and numerous cats and dogs. Life on their farm just outside of Silverton was usually busy, and she filled her days as a consummate homemaker, chef, seamstress, gardener, and short-order cook. During harvest time, no one could serve a better three-course meal out of the back of a pick-up. Notwithstanding a hectic schedule, Joyce always made time to attend piano recitals, school concerts, baseball games, and other activities her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren participated in.

Joyce is survived by her daughters, Lisa Goodell (Steve) and Julie Howell (Richard); sons, Tim Roth (Becky), David Roth (Dawn) and Mark Roth (Lisa); thirteen grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Dale Larson, and by her sisters, Shirley Wertz and Carolyn Hutton (Marlin). Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, and by her parents.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, at Emmanuel Bible Church of Pratum. Visitation will be 1-8pm, Friday, Feb. 14 at Unger Funeral Chapel of Silverton.
