Larry Dean Schrecengost|
July 18, 1949 - February 24, 2013
SALEM - Larry, 63, passed away peacefully at Salem Hospital with his wife of 31 years holding his hand. He was an elementary special education teacher for 22 years. He retired in 1999 due to disability originating from a football injury at age 13.
Born in Salem, Oregon, he was the 4th child of Fred and Greta Schrecengost. His oldest sibling and only sister, Greta Ann Hill, died while Larry was still in high school due to complications with M.S.. Larry is survived by his wife Michelle (McKenzie) Schrecengost, sons Brian, Shaun, and Nathan (Kimmy) Gustafson and one precious grandson, Lincoln David Gustafson. Also surviving are brothers Fred (Virginia), Ken (Margaret), and Rick (Debbie) and several nieces and nephews.
Larry cherished his family, including foster sons Matthew and Jason, and he loved his "pet ranch" in rural south Salem. He was worshiped by his best friend Rusty and never met a dog he didn't enjoy.
Great days included fishing and crabbing on the Oregon coast, any casino with a buffet, an evening in his recliner watching a movie near a cozy fire, and standing back at the end of a day observing a job well done. Larry gave more than he took and left the world a better place.
He was a regular volunteer for the Arc and spent more than half his life serving them. He served several terms as a board officer, was director multiple times, did odd jobs as needed, and in recent years assisted with office work.
A recreation opportunity for people with developmental disabilities will be created in honor of his life long commitment to enriching the lives of people with intellectual special needs. Remembrances honoring Larry may be sent to:

Memorial Services will be at 2pm Friday, March 1st at Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
