SALEM - Leo Edgar Buchheit was born on September 12, 1935 in Mt. Angel, Oregon. Born the youngest of 12 children he picked up the nickname Peanuts. This was a name that would stick for his whole life. He graduated from Mt. Angel Prep in 1954. In 1955 he married his high school sweetheart Margaret Drescher with whom he celebrated almost 58 years together.
Leo served in the National Guard for three years, and remained a proud supporter of all branches of military service his whole life. Also in service to his community Leo was a member of the 336 Elks Lodge, coached Babe Ruth baseball, and for 10 years volunteered as a marshal for the Fred Meyer Challenge Golf Tournament. He was also a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.
His first jobs were with Curly's Dairy and Arden's Dairy delivering dairy products until 1976 when he became owner of Suburban Garbage with his two older brothers. He remained in this position until he retired. In his final days the drivers of Suburban Garbage honored him with a drive-by salute on the street where he lived.
Together Leo and Marge traveled to Europe, The Holy Land and many other places. Besides traveling he enjoyed gardening, golf, NASCAR, any sporting event on TV, and was an avid Beaver fan. He also enjoyed watching his grandkids at their football games. Leo was the proud owner of a 1955 Chevy BelAire, 1936 Chevy 4-door sedan, and 1955 red Chevy Pick-up.
Leo is survived by his wife Marge, sons Lon (Wendy) Buchheit, Randy (Sherri) Buchheit and Doug (Crystal) Buchheit, and daughtersTherese (Jerry) Johnson and Mary (Art) Kuenzi. Leo was a proud grandfather of Luke, Rachel, Holly, Brad, Chad, Natalie, Shannon, Jacqueline, Kenny, Kelsi, Jordan, Mitch, Heidi, Darcy, Derrick, Emily, Shane, and Brooklyn. He was the proud Great-grandfather of Lindsay, Wyatt, Tyler, Faith, Trevon, Charlie, Maddie, Jaeden, Ella, and Camden with one due in May. Surviving siblings to Leo include Wilma Walen, Evelyn Hynes, Robert Buchheit, Paul Buchheit, and John Buchheit. He was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Mary Buchheit, three brothers, three sisters, and grandson Landon Kuenzi.
Viewing is Wednesday April 24, 2013 from 10 am to 6 pm at Crown Memorial Center Salem, 412 Lancaster Dr. NE, Salem, OR 97301. Mass of Christian burial is Thursday April 25, 2013 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church at 11 am. A Celebration of Life will be held also on Thursday at Anthony Hall, 11758 Sublimity Road, Sublimity, OR at 5:30 pm.
