Louanne Marie Mentzel Whitton
May 29, 1947 - May 25, 2014
Louanne Marie was born to Gladys and Glenn Mentzel in Portland, Oregon and grew up with her sister Elizabeth in the Mt. Tabor neighborhood. She graduated from St. Mary's Academy, Gonzaga University and Eastern Washington University, joined the Jesuit Volunteer Corp and began her teaching career at St. Mary's Mission in Omak, Washington. She made many lifelong friendships during her years in the JVC, including her future husband Curtis Whitton. Louanne and Curtis were married on June 2, 1973 and shared many adventures over more than 40 years of marriage.
The couple moved to Salem where Louanne began teaching at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School and gave birth to her first child, Elaine, in 1979 and her second child, David, in 1982. She joined the Chemeketa Community College faculty in 1984 and spent 30 years there, inspiring both her students and her colleagues.
Louanne and Curtis continued travelling with their best friends, the Bucket Heads, and enjoying their time at home in Salem. Even after she was diagnosed with leukemia (CMML) in 2011 Louanne never lost her optimism or her enthusiasm for life. Louanne passed away at OHSU hospital in Portland, Oregon, surrounded by her family.
The family is holding a public Celebration of Life at their home in South Salem (265 Luther St. S.) from 2-4pm on Saturday, June 28th.
