Marion Radford Simmons Creswell

March 28, 1919 - September 27, 2013

Marion Radford Simmons Creswell, 94, of Salem, Oregon, passed away peacefully on September 27, 2013 with family at her side. Marion was born March 28, 1919 in Georgetown, N.Y., the daughter of Dwight and Alice Simmons. She graduated from The Cortland Normal School in 1940 and began a career as an elementary school teacher. She went on to teach school in Stanfordville, N.Y., Port Byron, N.Y., and Philadelphia, PA.

She was a long time resident of Stanfordville, N. Y. where she married the love of her life, Wilbur Nevling Creswell in 1943. They spent 32 years together raising a family on their beautiful family farm before Wilbur's passing in 1975. She also resided in Bangall, N. Y. and Cooperstown, N. Y. In later life, Marion was a resident of Westview Meadows in Montpelier, VT before her final residence at Harmony House in Salem, Oregon.

Marion was very interested in local and family history and was the author of the history of the Attlebury School in Attlebury, N.Y. She was also a member of the Stanfordville Historical Society, the Stanfordville United Church of Christ and the Stanfordville Garden Club.

Another of her passions was antiques and she owned and operated Wagon House Antiques in Stanfordville, N.Y. and Bangall, N.Y. She loved meeting and greeting people there and spent many happy hours at auctions and sales looking for treasures.

Marion was an accomplished violinist and piano player. She was a member of the Dutchess County Philharmonic and a special thrill was playing with them at Carnegie Hall in 1953. Her love of music continued throughout her life. She played her violin into her nineties and in later life was a member of the Montpelier Community Orchestra. She inspired her children and grandchildren to love and appreciate music. Her family plays trumpet, french horn, flute, violin, cello, guitar, and drums.

Her greatest joy in life was her family. She was a loving and devoted mother to six children. She is survived by Nancy Creswell and John Ostrum of Montpelier, VT, Karen Creswell and Shelly Lecher of Salem, OR., Jeff and Pat Creswell of Dover Plains, N.Y., Jane Creswell and Bruce Jaffe of Boston, MA., Lynne and Joe Hilko of Ballston Spa, N.Y. and Jill Creswell of Montpelier, VT. She is also survived by twelve grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Also important in her life were her special caregivers, Nancy Clay of Plainfield, VT and Michelle Nixon and her staff of angels at Harmony House in Salem, Oregon.
