Mary Ellen Graves Gerety

August 13, 1916 - September 20, 2013

Mary Ellen Graves Gerety, 97, passed peacefully into the arms of her Savior on Monday September 30, 2013 at the United Methodist Retirement Center in Salem, Oregon. Mary Ellen was born August 13, 1916 to James Anderson Graves and Florence Eloise Collins in Mullins, South Carolina. She had one sister and four brothers. She graduated with honors from Lakeview High School and attended Winthrop College in Rock Hill, South Carolina. She taught kindergarten and first grade. Mary Ellen married the love of her life John Francis Gerety II at the Methodist Church in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on February 7, 1942. John was in the Air Force for 22 ½ years and the family lived in Florida, Georgia, Japan, Alaska, Illinois, Washington DC, South Carolina, Michigan, and Wisconsin. Mary Ellen moved to Salem, Oregon to be near her daughter in 1992. She was a lifelong Methodist active on numerous committees and enjoyed attending Annual Conference in Wisconsin and Oregon. She was a member of PEO and loved her sisters. Mary Ellen loved to extend her Southern hospitality to family and friends by cooking and entertaining.

Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her parents, husband John, son Jack, daughter in love Sandy, son in love Ron, sister Sophie Jean Jackson, brothers Howard, Luther, Charles and Marvin Graves. She is survived by her daughter Fran Eriksen, grandsons Brian (Jackie), James and Curtis (Sara) Eriksen, granddaughters Michelle McCluskey (Mike) Colorado and Shana Tucker (Mike) Nevada, great granddaughters Lauren and Katelyn, and great grandsons Johnathan and Max of Salem. Nieces Ann Jackson, Alexis Schlimmer, Becky Parkins, Carol Jones, and Pat Boyle.

A service will be held at Salem First United Methodist Church 600 State St. at 2pm on Sunday November 10, 2013. Donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church Stephen Ministry program or the Church van fund.
