January 17, 1951 - November 28, 2013
Michael (Mick) passed peacefully into eternity Thanksgiving Day November 28 in Salem, Oregon after a courageous four year battle with cancer. Family and friends were with him continuously during his last days offering encouragement and support.
Mike was born January 17, 1951 in Salem, Oregon to Warren (Bud) and Leota Killinger. He was raised in Aumsville, Oregon attending Aumsville Elementary School and Cascade Union High School. Mike started working on the family farms along with his siblings and cousins picking pole beans. Being a "Jack of All Trades" and having an adventurous spirit, he held jobs in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Arizona and California. His favorite stories are of a job in Washington working on a farm with two of his siblings. He often recalled working in the Arizona heat as an apprentice plumber.
In later years, when his health began to fail and he could no longer work, he developed hobbies to fill his time. He loved to collect and fix old lighters, plant a annual garden, watch old western and action movies, read Western novels (especially Zane Gray) and listen to old time country music. Johnny Cash was his favorite artist. Mike loved to visit with friends over a cup of coffee. He never met a stranger.
Mike loved cats more than any other animal. His favorite was "Catty". Mike and his mother found Catty when she was three weeks old. They bottle fed her and she survived to the old age of 18. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Salem Friends of Felines.
Thank you to Aldo Uribe for his wonderful care and support to Mike during his final days and to Willamette Valley Hospice for their support and dedication to making Mike comfortable during his last 14 months struggling with cancer.
Mike is survived by sisters Tari Glocar (Cliff Probasco) Salem, Shannon (George) Maisel, Stayton, brothers Clark (Rebecca) Killinger, Concord, New Hampshire, Dave Killinger, Albany, step sister Brenda Schwartz (Wylo) Portland, Step Mother Fern Killinger West, Portland, son Corey Massey, Salem, many nieces, nephews, and cousins, his caregiver Aldo Uribe, and longtime friends who supported him faithfully during his illness, Keiley O'Malley and Joanne Flores. Mike was preceded in death by his parents.
At Mike's request, there will be no services. He will be cremated and his ashes scattered in his favorite fishing spot.
A million times we needed you.
A million times we cried,
If love alone could have saved you,
You never would have died.
In life we loved you dearly,
In death we love you still.
In our hearts you hold a special place
No one else can ever fill.
It broke our hearts to lose you,
But you did not go alone, for
a part of us went with you,
The day God called you home.
