Murl Wayne Anderson

March 23, 1925 - December 12, 2013

WILSONVILLE - Murl Wayne Anderson, 88, formerly of Silverton and Roseburg, passed away peacefully Thursday, December 12, 2013.

Murl was born in Freeborn, Minnesota, to Ole and Ella May (Wesley) Anderson, the fourth of seven children. He moved to the Baker City, Oregon area in the 1940s where he graduated from Baker High School. He attended Oregon State University, where he played football and earned his bachelors and masters degrees. He later earned a doctorate degree in Education at the University of Oregon.

Murl began his teaching and coaching career in Silverton, where he also became athletic director and principal. Under his leadership, the Silverton Foxes football team played in the state championship game. Murl went on to hold administrative positions in Richland, Washington; at Kamehameha Schools in Honolulu, Hawaii; and was superintendent of public schools at Roseburg High School, where he retired.

Following his retirement, he went on to serve as interim superintendent on several occasions at Bend, Tillamook, Newport, Eagle Point, Prairie City, and McMinnville.

Murl was preceded in death by spouse of 55 years, Roselea, who died in 2003; son Randy Anderson, who died in 2004; sister, Joy and brothers Lloyd, Pat and Curly.

He is survived by his loving wife of 8 years, Colleen Anderson of Wilsonville; son Jim Anderson and daughter-in-law Patricia Devine of Seattle; sisters Mary Alcorn of Medford and Marge Brittain of Baker City; Colleen's son Lee Fuge and his wife Renee of Canby; and Colleen's daughter Regenia Valentine and her husband Steven of Richland, Oregon. He is also survived by the many students whom he had the pleasure of teaching and coaching.

The funeral service will take place at 2:30 p.m., on Saturday, December 28, 2013, at Unger Funeral Chapel of Silverton, with burial to follow in the family plot at Valley View Cemetery, also in Silverton, with a reception to follow at Silverton Immanuel Lutheran Church.
