Roger Gleason Obituary

Roger Allen Gleason

November 21, 1938 - April 11, 2013

Roger Allen Gleason lived a long, good life. Born in Salina, Kansas on November 21, 1938 to Berdie and Frank Gleason, he was raised by his grandmother, Zeffa, after his mother passed away. Growing up in rural Kansas gave him a yearning for adventure, and so it was, shortly after his 17th birthday that he joined the Navy and served his country aboard the USS Bon Homme Richard.

While he was overseas, Roger became pen-pals with Charlie Helm, they met in Santa Cruz, California, and married in 1958. Roger and Charlie were married for 20 years and came to be blessed with three daughters. In 1970, they moved their family north, to Silverton, Oregon, for a life in the country, closer to his father and beloved step-mother, Marie. His girls, Wendy Gleason, of Silverton, Oregon, and Tish Gleason-Dralle, and Kelly Gleason-Dodd, of Mt. Vernon, Washington, will love and miss him always.

In 1998, Roger married his dear love, Doris, and became step-father to Josh, Jason, and Angelina Cude. Along with Doris, Roger loved the Lord and service, family, golfing, riding bicycles, and traveling. Together they attended Salem Evangelical Church. Inseparable, in 2001 they became snowbirds, motoring annually from their home in Salem, Oregon, to Arizona, Oklahoma, Kansas, California and Washington. They were warmly received by family and friends wherever they roamed.

Roger passed away in Yuma, Arizona on April 11, 2013. He's survived by his brothers and sisters; Gary, Bill, and Ronny Gleason, in Salina, Kansas; Barbara Osborn, in Burbank, California; Dennis Gleason, in Estacada, Oregon; Charles Gleason in Grand Ronde, Oregon; and Darlene Gleason-Nelson, in Salem, Oregon. His older brother, Frank Jr. (Boomie) Gleason, preceded him in passing. He leaves behind his grandchildren, who remember him with love and good humor; Tia and Damon Davidson, and Jesse Whitley, in Portland, Oregon; Tom Howard, in Modesto, California; Tim and Kristi Howard, Mike and Elliot Dodd, and Richard Gleason in Mt. Vernon, Washington, and Ryan Dralle, in Kirkland, Washington, along with his great-grandchildren, Calvin, Cyleigh, and Cayden Howard, in Mt. Vernon, Washington, and Gage Howard, in Augusta, Kansas.

Forever a seaman, Roger loved boating and revered the ocean. He will rest in peace in Roche Harbor, Washington, and his memorial will be observed in Silverton, Oregon. Recalling their assistance when he was a child with deep gratitude, donations in Roger's memory should be made to the Salvation Army.

So many fun times boating with Roger !! Then he ended up being my Mother's next door neighbor. She really enjoyed their friendship over the years, and I had an opportunity to see him occasionally when I'd visit her. A good guy !!

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Roger's (Pigpen's) passing. We were away and were just told about it today. Lots of great, fun memories. Especially in the boating days. My Mom so enjoyed having Roger and Doris as neighbors until she then moved to Silverton. The two of them can spend time "chatting" again which she so enjoyed. Roger was one of a kind. Howard and I extend our heartfelt condolences.

Roger And I had a special bond.I remember him as a curly headed little boy with freckles on his nose and always smiling!! He didn't have an easy time growing up but he didn't know that. Grma Gleason did the best she could and loved him very much as did we all. He was everybody's baby since his Mother(Bertie) died at his birth.I have a son who is named after Roger ( Steven Allen Stout). He has instilled his love of family in all of his daughters as their love for each other comes across loud and clear!!I love you dear cousin and know you are in a better place and with Aunt Bertie and Uncle Frank and Grma Gleason.RIP,you will be missed by many...SIS (LaDonna)

Doris & Family All ... Many of my thoughts and prayers are with each of you. At the end of each life is a legacy of love. Those we have cherished will remain with us in every memory that we continue to hold in our hearts. True Love is Eternal and here once again there has been another link added to the family chain where we will all once meet again. God Bless you, God Bless us all but can you imagine what God has to go through as he is continuously surrounded by such a 'motley crew'. Roger will be missed. I feel and have felt very fortunate to be a part of this family. May the support and compassion around you ease your hearts and sustain you.

My heartfelt sympathies to the family. Losing a loved one in death may be one of the hardest things any of us will ever have to cope with. May you take refuge to the God of all comfort who promised to supply us with the strength at this difficult time. - Romans 15:5
