Shelley Marie Magnuson of Salem, 60, died Thursday March 27th after a brief illness. Shelley was born in Astoria Oregon to Clifford and Edna Magnuson where she was raised with her older brothers and sister on a dairy farm along the Lewis and Clark River. She loved singing, riding her horse, and participating in 4-H. In her senior year, she toured Europe with the Astoria High School band. Shelley graduated from Astoria High School in 1973 and went to Clatsop Community College and then on to Northwest Christian College where she earned and Associate of Science Degree in 1978. While at Northwest Christian she made many lifelong friends and embraced a calling to Christian service that enriched her life and the lives of countless others. In 1980 she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education from Oregon State University.
Her early career was as a preschool teacher at Philomath Preschool, Suburban Christian Preschool and Corvallis Community Day Care. From 1985 to 1987 she worked as a preschool educator for Wycliff Bible Translators in Idyllwild California. When she returned to Oregon she worked for the Oregon Department of Education for a number of years in the Child Nutrition and School bus programs before taking a job as Administrative Assistant at Turner Retirement Homes in Turner Oregon. She eventually became the TRH Activities Director where she put her energy, creativity, organizational skills and love for the residents to good work organizing special events, activities, and trips. As a side hobby/business, she perfected a caramel corn recipe which she sold as Shelley's Best in the West Caramel Corn at craft fairs and bazaars throughout the valley. She enjoyed traveling with family and friends and was also a skilled seamstress and crafter and managed the Church Mouse Christmas Bazaar in Turner for many years.
As a woman of deep and abiding faith, Shelley was active with Oregon Christian Endeavor and was an integral part of her church family at Turner Christian Church.
Shelley loved her two cats and doted on her nieces and nephews Katherine and Kimberly Magnuson, Nerissa and Kevin Burr, and Michael and Bryan Magnuson. She took the same kind of joy in lavishing love on her great niece and nephew Lucille and Jasper Burr-Russ. She is survived by her brother Mark Magnuson of Tacoma and his wife Venetia, sister Karin Magnuson of Albany and her 6 nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents Clifford and Edna Magnuson and brother Karl Magnuson.
