Shirley Antonson Obituary
Shirley Ann Antonson

January 15, 1940 - March 27, 2011

SALEM - Shirley, 71, died Mar. 27, 2011 in Salem. She was born Jan. 15, 1940 at home in Leach, Oklahoma. Shirley was the sixth of ten children born to Jesse and Cora Simpson. She is survived by sisters, Alice Wilson, Pearl Bruton, Ella Dean Higley (Mark), Aileen Sawyers, Jane Bruce (Larry), Judy Nelson (Bruce); brothers, Jerry Simpson, Don Simpson; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, Tom.

Shirley married high school sweetheart Jerry Antonson in Silverton on July 17, 1959. She is survived by her husband; and four sons, Jon (Debbie), Paul (Valeri), Daniel (Laura) and Peter (Jeanna); five grandchildren, Rachel Foster, Ryan Leach (Annie), Jennifer Antonson, John Antonson, Thomas Antonson; three great-grandchildren, Trevor, Gwen and McKenzi Foster.

Shirley was a member of Silverton High's class of 1958. After high school she entered nurse's training at Sacred Heart in Eugene. Marriage and raising a family interrupted her nursing career plans. She returned to school in 1976 and earned certification as a Licensed Practical Nurse. Later she again returned to school and earned her credential as a Registered Nurse. She worked, during her career, for Silver Garden's Care Home in Silverton, at Benedictine Nursing Home and Salem Hospital. She worked the last twelve years as a Home Care Nurse retiring in 2001.

Shirley was an avid reader. She loved the Oregon Coast, caring for her many roses and hanging baskets, and all manner of indoor and outdoor plants. Even though very ill she was a devoted caregiver to her husband right up until her final hospitalization. She lived her life with a sense of humor and a caring, problem solving attitude. She valued most of all spending time with all her family.

Viewing will be 12 to 5 p.m., Tue., March 29th with a Funeral Service at 2 p.m., Wed., March 30th all at Unger Funeral Chapel, Silverton. Interment will follow at Valley View Cemetery. Contributions in lieu of flowers can be made to the Kidney Association or the Liver Foundation.
