Wandaline Engle Purcell

December 6, 1927 ~ October 26, 2013

Wandaline Engle Purcell was born in Pea Ridge, Arkansas on December 6, 1927. During her youth, her family traveled in an old open truck loaded down with all their possessions and moved West, settling in Salem, Oregon. Her sisters, Jacqueline (Engle) Purcell, Bonita (Engle) O'Connor and a brother, Robert Engle (deceased) grew up in the Keizer area; all attending Salem High.

In high school, Wandaline fell in love with a fellow student and football player, Lester M. Purcell. While on military leave, Les married Wandaline on November 20, 1945. Their first child, Donald E. Purcell was born 9 months later. (Patricia) Carol Purcell was born in 1950. Carol married A. Britt Anderson and they have two sons, Scott D. Anderson and Tyler B. Anderson who married Sarah Sinclair, adding a daughter to the family.

An active and generous woman, during the early years of her family, Wandaline was involved in several organizations: Boy Scouts, Brownies, Girl Scouts and Middle Grove School PTA. As her interests moved into new directions, she became a member and leader at McNary Golf Club, the Women's Golf Club Association, Willow Park Garden Club, Keizer Church of Christ, and Willamette Valley Christmas Association. As project Chairperson for the Christmas Association, Wandaline had many opportunities to coordinate donations to non-profit organizations such as Gilbert House - Discovery Place, Salem's Riverfront Carousel, Oregon Gardens, and Oregon Capital-Wilson Park. Wandaline resigned from the organizations one by one as Alzheimer's limited her activities.

Her family remembers her as a woman of quiet strength, strong faith and loving to all. As a wife, mother and grandmother, she made a home that made holidays and vacations special events for the family. Her lemon cookies were a special treat made for her grandsons.

Her memorial service, and burial, were held October 31st at the Willamette National Cemetery.
