HEMET, CA - Kenneth Wendell "Wendy" Bastion passed away on June 13, 2011 after an eight-year-long battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Wendy was born in Long Beach, CA on October 22, 1938 to Roy Irvin Bastion and Florence Marie Smallwood Bastion. Wendy met his future wife, Karen Gay Bryant of Monmouth, OR at Central High School in Independence, OR. They were married on July 17, 1956 in Reno, NV and raised three children together: Terry, Sherry and Laurie.

Wendy started his military career with the Air Force and was stationed in Moses Lake, WA, Tacoma, WA, Fontainebleau, France and at the University of Oregon in Eugene, OR for ROTC duty. Wendy then switched services and became a Warrant Officer in the Army. This lead to two tours of duty in Vietnam, one in which he received the Soldier's Medal of Honor for saving five men from a burning helicopter.

Wendy was later stationed in Colorado Springs, CO, Fort Lewis, WA and Okinawa, Japan. All three of his children graduated from Kubasaki High School in Okinawa. Wendy's last duty station was in Fort Lewis, WA. After he retired, Wendy finished his degree in Psychology at Pacific Lutheran University.

Wendy and Karen opened their first travel agency in 1981. Over the years, they expanded to four stores. In February, 1995, they became snow birds and bought a house in Hemet, CA. In 1999, they moved form Tacoma, WA to Allyn, WA. Wendy loved salmon fishing, golfing and wood carving. They eventually sold their businesses; the last one in 2003.

In 2006, Wendy and Karen celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a seven-day cruise to the U. S. Virgin Islands. They were accompanied by all seventeen of their children and grandchildren.

Wendy is survived by his wife of 54 years; his children, Terry Allen Bastion and his wife Nancy Sorensen Bastion of Yelm, WA, Sherry Bastion and her husband Robert Idol of Cary, NC and Laurie Marie Clark and her husband George Clark of Ellensburg, WA; his seven grandchildren, Kevin Clark, Kristen Clark, Kyle Clark, Stephanie Bastion Serdar, Greg Bastion, Melissa Qualls and Stephen Qualls and two great-grandchildren, Audrey Clark and Ellianna Serdar.
